There needs to be a deterent (especially here in the soft, nanny state UK)

Ive already said this but there is no evidence whatsoever that the death penalty acts as a deterent as all criminals think they wont get caught and therefor the punnishment for the crime they commited doesnt matter. Look at the murder rates of countries with the death penalty and countries without the death penalty and i think you will find that most countries without the death penalty have either the same murder rates as those countries with the death penalty or most likely even lower murder rates than countries with the death penalty. Capital punishment doesnt deter criminals but fixing the social issues in your country does lower crime considerably.

On the grounds that i could easily be wrong, I refuse to use 'statistics', 'social issues' and 'murder rates' for this post; only my opinion Ykick, which I thought this post was about :mf_tongue:

My belief is that sooner or later, it would make some of those that are capable of murder to think twice about it. In the meantime (and even if it doesn't put them off) we have got rid of any chance that a killer could do the same again once released.

With ANY government like ours, we aren't going to fix our social issues in the next 20 years.

They should replace the death penalty with life (natural life btw, not that 20 year crap) sentences, in special prisons that are purposely made to have it MUCH worse then your average ones.

Make them wish they had got the death penalty sort of thing :P

More to the point it would rid the world of disgusting individuals like Ian Huntley and allow more prison room for other offenders

Not much less actually, and maybe more sometimes.

Great post! I never understand the American version of Christianity. It clearly preaches forgiveness in the Bible ("let he who is without sin cast the first stone" and all that) and America is the most Christian nation in the developed world, yet it is the only one to still have the death penalty. (Incidentally it also has some of the highest crime rates)

Indeed. They often have high crime rates too.

this execution was brought on by the bush administration.bush preaches the bible yet as govoner of texas he had the highest execution rate among the other states, and now as president he continues to execute people in the name of war.how many iraqi's have died in the name of democracy.was it really neccesary to execute saddam?yes.was it neccesary to execute saddam so quickly?no.it was neccesary for the bush administation though.he has failed as a leader and has failed in war.as a deeply religous man as he is,he lied to the world in order to invade iraq.how will his god see him when it is his time to go.will bush be seen as a man of principle or just another lying tyrant like saddam

In war, people die.

Get over yourself.

It's also in the bible that the death penalty can be used.

yes people die in war.but within the confines of this war, bush is the executioner in the name of democracy.it is not the responsibility of bush or any other one person.again saddam deserved to die for his actions, but not at the cost of hundreds of thousands of innocent lives.bush is no better than saddam.he is a dictator of democracy that may work for the west, but should not be forced on those who have different beliefs.i'm sure bush would love to convert every other religion to his own

Democracy can work in the middle east if the government is not influenced by religion, but that won't happen for a long time.

Unfortunatly most governments around the world are effected by religion. I agree that a governemnt without religion would be best but for some reason the religious nuts always seem to get into power.

i agree, but the current american administation is influenced by religion, and that religion is dictating the beliefs of others.that i don't agree with.this current administration only sees it as being the right.this current administration as with any other has based it's war on the religion of others, and refuses to understand the rights of others.

those kinds of governments do exist, china, north korea to name a couple, yet there are still nuts in power as well.it's hard to say what is right and wrong, but i guess i'm a dreamer thinking we can just get along without fanaticism of religion

Religion will still remain in the world. It's just the damned extremists we have to worry about.

very true!so i guess we have to keep the so called leaders accountable for their actions.saddam was executed for crimes against humanity,so what are the charges we can convict bush on?he needs to be held accountable for the 3000+american soilders that have died as well as the british, and any other soilder that has died.and let's not forget the iraqi innocents that have been sacrifice in the name of the bush democracy push.look at it from this point.how can iraq become a democracy when it is surrounded by islamic fundamentalists.it was a lost situation from the start, and bush knew it.bush's war was based on lies, not on terror.iraq was not a threat to america or the world.who's more of a threat, iraq under the control of saddam or iran,or north korea?

I hate people who use the bible to say things are alright.... Not everyone is religious and religion is not law.

Yes people die in wars, but people are generally against wars too

pull your head out of the sand!!!the court was a puppet of the government which was technically put into place by the american government.if you were able to observe any of the court proceedings you'll recognize it was just a farce.the defence was subjected to the wimms of the court.as stated even before the trail started by the p.m. of iraq, saddam would be executed before the new year.was justice served?yes and i never said it was'nt.saddam was the author of his own fate, but did he recieve a just day in court?no!in any other so called democracy the actions of the court proceedings would never have been accepted.iraq is considered a democracy now,is'nt it?if not why are we there?bush said mission accomplished!!

Your case would be stronger if you used proper punctuation. As it stands, you read like a child. Presentation does matter, mate.

I am for the death penalty.

I believe he (she?) answered the question of the topic. Perhaps you need to inspect that post a bit closer.......

I'm for the death penalty provided there is a healthy appeals process in place, and it's been exhausted before the execution.

hahaha!another senseless comment towards me.as for your comment directed towards the actual subject matter.i agree with you.in the case of saddam, there was no appeals process that would be legal in any other democracy.there was only going to be one outcome, and that was the end of saddam

i am against the sentence!

the reasons.1 he was killed (not punished) for the killing of shiites during a civil war,

2.he was not allowed to properly address the court, few lawers and judges resigned from the court,

3.he was not tried for the killing of kurds, i belive he deserved the punishment for killing of kurds and not shiites.

So Chris, I'm interested in what the Bible has to say about the death penalty. Is it in the Old Testament? What is your interpretation of the "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" part of the Bible?

From that i am guessing you are sunni then?

Murder is murder, it doesn't matter who dies.
