BMW expects Villeneuve to be quick

http://www.f1racing.net/en/news.php?newsID=104616

BMW is expecting Jacques Villeneuve to be on the pace right from the start of the 2006 season and put his difficult comeback behind him. A lot of eyes will be watching Villeneuve and to avoid criticism the 1997 world champion will need to make sure he can at least match new team mate Nick Heidfeld.

"We had some mettings and we got the impression that he's really motivated for next season to build on the performance he showed towards the end of last seasson," BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen told Reuters.

"On that basis we decided that he'd be our other driver next year," Theissen added. "The relationship is okay - we had some meetings and it's now perfect."

"He'll get the same support as Nick Heidfeld and we expect him to be as strong as Nick. He's driven this car on Michelin tyres for an entire season so there's no reason why he shouldn't be strong from the beginning," Theissen concluded.

Am I paranoid or do you get the feeling JV is being setup here. Since when does Mario ever use the term "perfect". I don't buy this at all. It's clear BMW went with JV due to his strong contract, but I can't believe he will get the same treatment as Heidfeld. The truth in the pudding will be if BMW listen to JV and let him setup his car how he would like. Will know for sure in a few months but I got a bad feeling after reading that article.

No you are not paranoid, I too fear for the JVians on this forum as I see the fall from grace already being set up....

I'm not going to make any judgements, but all I will say is that the relationship has not really gotten off to the best of starts. I hope for JV's and BMW's sake that this is quickly forgotten and they concentrate on racing.

Bickering is part of F1, I hope.

BMW wants to move up the ladder.

JV performs or not, BMW need not retain him for 2007. SO, I hope JV will be helped wholeheartedly by BMW.

It is upto JV to perform now.

Indeed, I think this comment shows that BMW are putting a little pressure on JV, perhaps to orchestrate his departure at the end of 2006.

Interesting comments. nojvnof1 showed me a longer version of this on reuters.co.uk. I tend to agree with you that they are not overly enthusiastic about JV. In the longer interview Mario more or less says JV was only almost as good as FM at the end of last year. I don't notice anything about "perfect" but the word "expect" is used a lot and strikes me as a double-edged sword. If he performs well then he'll be fine (at least for 2006) though.

I agree Murray. It's all in JV's hands now. I don't doubt that the team will support him as much as they can and will not be sacrificed to benefit Nick's season, it wouldn't look good on BMW in their first season. I agree with Mario's latter comment though, JV should be there or thereabouts in relation to Nick right from Bahrain. He simply cannot afford another diabolical start like this year, having said that, I feel the issues which contributed in part to that lack of pace were sorted throughout this year and it's all in JV's hands now.

The journey starts today as he is testing for the first time and then on Friday and Saturday. Jacques knows what he has to do, in testing and during the season, I think he'll earn some respect back.

cheers Girl Racer

Good luck, I'd be watching for the long knives

I've been watching for them since joining this board, I think I know who to look out for. Hopefully JV will come through and those knives will go at another driver (for once!!!)

I think JV will have to drive like a champion in order to have any chance of benig retained in 07 - he's really going to have to do something special

 What is it to drive like a champion? JV was an F1 world champion at the start of 2005, when he drove like an inept rookie.

that's totally correct. He's going to have to do something special to earn some respect back, but I think he has what it takes to do it.

The new engine package will suit JV. His style allows him to carry more speed into the corners, and is one of the primary reasons he is hard to pass. Even in a slower car people get surprised at how long he goes fast into the corners.

The brake and then turn guys are going to have some adjusting to do. With less grunt at the back, it is going to be important to carry speed through the corners

JV seems to be quite positive in this early stage of development so that is a positive, and all of what YHR has said is true. It looks good so far, hopefully JV can convert this promise into competitiveness, and after topping testing yesterday, it seems he's taken the first steps in doing just that...I hope.

where did I say he's at the top of his game? Now you're just pulling crap out of nowhere. All we said was that he is positive about the new rules (FACT), he did a good time (FACT) and we acknowledged in another thread that he was on fumes (FACT). I've said it's a good morale boost and good for the confidence, do you care to argue otherwise?

where does that categorically state JV is at the top of his game? All it says it looks promising (car ran reliably and quick, JV did a good job, fastest V8 time of the whole 4 day test). How am I wrong?

excuse my "huh" post. When I read your post the bit in bold didn't come up for some reason, but I've seen it now, hence I edited it.

Well I feel it is promising. JV was surely not the only driver in the four day test to run on fumes. JV's time was the fastest V8 of the whole test, hence it seems speed is there. They have also run reliably after two days of problems, and JV is complementary about the engines and the rules, hence I feel it is promising.
