Toro Rosso To Use Adrian Newey Designed Car

It is looking increasingly likely that Toro Rosso and Red Bull will race effectively the same chassis in 2007.

The move - as is Super Aguri and Honda's similar plan - is highly controversial, as the spirit of the F1 regulations forbids the use of customer cars until a change in the rules for 2008.

Running basically a 2005 Red Bull last year, Toro Rosso sidestepped the regulation by arguing that the 'STR1' had actually been built by a Ford subsidiary from the Jaguar days.

For 2007, their argument is that Red Bull and Toro Rosso's near-identical cars - to be respectively named 'RB3' and 'STR2' - have been designed and built by third party Red Bull Technologies, who employ Adrian Newey.

Toro Rosso team co-owner Gerhard Berger said: "We are confident the FIA will approve our car. Toro Rosso will fully own the intellectual rights."

The Faenza based team will return to the test tracks with STR2 in early February.

This is certainly a interesting peice of news and could potentially cause alot of problems as im certain the other teams wont be happy about this loophole.

Wow, this is controvertial at least we might get an idea what engine is better out of the ferrai and renault(if there going to run the same chassis

This will really help development of the RB3 if both teams are running the same chassis they could potentially gather twice as much data and develop the car twice as quick as other teams.

it is feasible, but i still am very confident in the renault being the better engine package, and RBR have a more experienced driver line up. But i think many people's predictions for the performance of STR may change in light of these new facts.

i expect other teams will have a say in this and FIA will have to announce something. But surely the car is designed and almost built by now? So i'm surprised this issue is raised now rather than half a year ago when they started designing the 07 car. i'm confused

This is the most interesting peice of F1 news we have had in weeks. I imagine that Toro Rosso have been planning this for a long time and they wouldnt have annonced this if they thought the STR2 wont be legal.

It will be interesting to see throughtout the season if the modifications made to the RB3 will be exactly copied by Toro Rosso . It almost seems a bit like cheating to me

Maybe that says the FIA have already given their conscent, In regard to the Sauber of 2004, they had the approval of the FIA to run the aero of the 2003 Ferrari before they were too deep into the construction of the car.

Mario is certainly not happy with these guys, I am sure others would join the rant.

I think STR may continue to remain as the junior team, as i guess STR may get the chassis updates a little later than Redbulls.

but surely if they're developing the RBR car then they're also developing the STR - and surely they would share all their data? And if RBR make a leap forward in 2007 and STR don't, surely that will raise questions? i'm not sure if i like it!

Webber has the same chances of winning the WDC as Irvine had in 99. if any driver win the WDC from RBR it will be DC. Last years performance drop was due to a lack of motivation driving a car with no development from after the first few races of the season. at least thats what i thought after seeing how disappointed I always thought DC was after the RBR did horribly and always said that the team better spends quality time on the RBR3

Spyker is another team that is not happy with the current situation of both STR & SAF1 having the potential ability to share chassis with their more competitive "big brothers"

Even the Honda engineers are p!ssed off that SAF1 are preparing to race a RA106 clone in 2007.
