Who Is The Best In Wet Conditions?

Recommended Posts

We all have our opinion on this, but even though I'm not a big fan of Schumacher, I have to admit he is probably the best.

Also, it will be very interesting what the young drivers can do in such conditions.

When it started to seem like it might rain on Sunday, or at some other point this weekend, I wondered this same thing.

I couldn't come up with an answer.

I've seen Alonso, Hamilton, Vettel, Button, Schumacher, etc. have great races in the wet.

I've seen that same cast of characters have terrible races in the wet.

No one, in the races I've seen which is admittedly few (I missed most of Schumacher's days at Ferrari, so I can only comment on 2006-present), stands out as being consistently great in the wet. I'm not sure this era has a "rainmaster" (yet...a lot of these guys are still young...) as much as it has a very competitive field of guys who can all win wet races, but can also screw them up pretty badly. Someone will doubtlessly refute that...and probably do a good job of it...

All the top drivers have excelled at one time or another in the wet. The last one who won everytime is the one people call "The Rainmaster" :P

Seriously, driving in the wet requires a unique mix of skill, car control, tire response and generous amounts of luck that is hard to establish a top guy. with a car even slightly off the driver's "comfort zone" the best driver can either end up on the wall, or lose enough confidence for not "feeling" the surface enough as to push as hard se he could.

We've seen amazing displays from Button (Canada 2011), Hamilton (Silverstone 2008), Alonso (Korea 2010), Schumacher (Spa 97), Kimi (Spa 2008), Vettel (Monza 2008)...and this among others!

According to the official press conference, in the past couple of years Lewis and Alonso both managed to win half the wet races, Schumi was known to be The Rainmaster, but so did Alessi in the past and many others, Button was praised then as the new Rainmaster, and then our George!

I think most of the top drivers are very, very good in the wet.

The field has levelled, these days.

Schumacher used to be head and shoulders above others in the wet. He is no longer (in fact, not since approximately 2002).

Senna was the last driver to be recognised as significantly better than others in the wet.

There is no clear leader right now.

Yep, there are plenty of drivers who are capable. Talent wise I'd say Hamilton is the best now (Silverstone 2008 being the most impressive wet victory for a while), with Alonso and Vettel close by. The rest (Schumi, Button, Webber, Kimi, etc) are close enough to win too, though. Button especially is always a threat in transitional conditions because of his ability to make good tyre choices (knowing when to switch).

If it's pouring heavily I would say a different name that on a wet track getting dryer and a different one in changeable conditions, etc.

I agree there are more than one Rainmaster. Some names we all have in mind are Schumacher, Button, Raikkonen, Alonso, Hamilton and Vettel. If I had to bet I'd put my money on the last three names.

It is not due only to the driver but to the car setup too. many times the teams bet: setup for an full rain race or a drying track? Car setup make big gaps.

I'm the best...

Oh wait, no that was another thread.... :)

I remember that thread. It was something like "who posts last is the best" and I did it.

So I'm the best.

There is always one driver who finds a way the best the others, as good as they are. Remover the car does not account for much and it is possible to see who is a true virtuoso and who is just another good driver. I hope we will have a chance to see a wet race in GB.

Going to have to go with Alonso on wet races and that is right now and not in the past. More wet races this year expect Alonso to do well.

I have to agree there is no one "rainmaster" anymore; on a wet/drying track surely button! when its actually wet tho i dont think we can call one person "the best"

Alonso went two years without a pole and then got two in a row during the wet qualifying in Silverstone and Hockenheim. He looks strongest in the rain this season.

I would also say Button. However, this year the McLaren seems weak in the rain so it is not helping much.
