Montoya Errors Defended

Recommended Posts

Exerpt from article:

Juan Pablo Montoya has been defended amid claims he was one of the disappointments of 2005. Former 10-time race winner Gerhard Berger, who worked closely with the Colombian when he was a Williams driver, said Montoya failed to prove a consistent match for McLaren teammate Kimi Raikkonen. ''He also made too many mistakes,'' the Austrian added.

However, Mercedes' Norbert Haug reckons 30-year-old 'JPM' is developing 'in the right direction'. ''We are even more optimistic for the future,'' the German told the Austrian 'Sport1' publication.

ED: Doesn't sound like much of a defense from the German... Good to see that he's optimistic though

Isn't JPM about to give birth to a Big Mac?

Gerhard cant talk. He was the King of Mistake Making. He should have written the manual.

JPM and Kimi are two very different drivers, with different attitudes. To compare them is natural. Just dont forget this; JPM had a shoulder injury making him miss out a few races.

And the McLaren team's strong point isnt exactly reliability is it.

:thbdn: Anyone see JPM's Helmet design with blowtorch melting the snowman(Iceman) early in the 05 season? If he is willing to make an ignorant statement such as that on his commencement with the McLaren, JPM should be beyond "developing in the right direction". Maybe Juan bribed Norby with an iced donut to say that! Montoya can be devestatingly quick at times, but ultimately *his inability to put together a satisfactory Fri Prac/Sat Qual./Sun Race consistently, *his reluctance to recognise he drives for a team as well as himself,

*his dangerous lack of perception lapping and overtaking

*the manner in which he communicates with his team and fellow drivers

will prevent him from ever becoming one of the greats......

montoya's season wasn't all that bad. by the time his form picked up he had to help kimi out.

@ pumpdoc : exactly what i was thinking! he must be at or very close to his peak by now!

:eusa_think: The yellow flags his accidents caused did more than his application to that task!!!!

What are you on about? Monteiro smacked into him at turkey, and pizzonia bashed into him at spa. Please give me example(s) of when jpm has made an overtaking or lapping error this year. Berger is being far too harsh. JPM wasnt a disappointment at all, he had a difficult start, but produced some brilliant drives, notably germany where he messed up quali then drove amazingly to fight up to 2nd in the race

I am no JPM fan - he reminds me of another very talented driver, Alain Prost, who was slightly more talented that JPM but more petulant! But to be fair to the lad he had a shoulder injury that never quite got the time to mend properly and he had to drive with an ice-pack (looks like it was destined to be the ice puting off the blow torch!) throughout the season.

We can only judge his form in 2006, also this season's car suited Kimi's style for most of the season.

A little harsh.

I still think he'll be driving better than Kimi next season though so Monty will have the last laugh.

You're predictions haven't been very good so far...

Good post Jimmy.

I didn't see the blowtorch-ice cube design but heard about it. Outrageous, isn't it? I can't understand how anyone can support that man...

When did he ever help Kimi out? I recall several instances were the selfish Columbian should have helped Kimi out but failed to do so... You'll recall that I criticized him heavily for this failure at the time.

Don't try and rewrite history Mr. Stride. Juan Montoya was at fault for the incident in Turkey and the jury is out on the Spa incident. He was definitely at fault for the incident in Japan though.

Have we had any racing since I started posting on here? My opinions, which is what they are, are valid ones which no one can begin to question until March at least next year.

I don't think much of your predictions either... You just guess like I am apparantly.

You have given 2 examples! If you are driving to help your team win a WDC and a Constructors Championship, and you are involved in 2 accidents in races where it is imperative to score points, risks should be CALCULATED....so even if JPM wasnt at fault, he should have driven SMARTER...i dont dispute he can drive FAST------Its F1, every driver on the grid is capable of a fast lap in a top car...
