Ecclestone: Accidents Should Not Be In Formula 1

Recommended Posts

Bernie Ecclestone is happy with the progress F1 has made improving the safety of the sport. "We are not in this business to entertain the public with having accidents," Ecclestone said at the Autosport show

We need to look after the drivers," Ecclestone continued. ""With Senna's accident, the television cameras stayed on air too long. They did not need to have done that, and they should not have done it."

Well accidents is a part of motor racing but its nice to see them trying improve safety but accidents is a part of this sport just like injuries are to football and so on. But if you want to cut down on accidents maybe they should start by taking out a certain team for 06 and let them prepare for 07. (Super Aguri) They are using an Arrows chassis which is slow and dangerous and letting Sato drive it (and some other japanese driver which i never heard of and last time a japanese driver i never heard of drove an F1 car well there were many accidents Takagi :P ). Your just spelling disaster there :P

I think Eccelstone and Mosley basically wants F1 to be a box car derby. Old geezers should get a new hobby, rumor has it that collecting stamps is pretty safe now a days.

The threat that an accident could be "just around the corner" is one of the contributing factors that make F1 exciting (anyone who denies this is just being PC... in a sense). If we slowed the cars right down, if there were loadws of overtaking and if they were built like brick s*** houses, accidents would be very rare, F1 would be very safe but also very dull. F1 needs to be quick and to have that, accidents will remain a part of the sport.

Indeed. The faster the merrier.

F1, or any form of motorsport for that matter, will never be 100% safe. There will always be an element of danger no matter the rules and regulations.

With the cars as safe as they are now though it does beg the question, just how fast would somebody be having to go these days to have an accident as awful as Senna's?

I have a very good picture of the Sato Heidfeld crash but it would be a bit sadistic to post it since it landed Taku in hospital

That doesn't stop Senna from posting them

It may not be the speed which is the vital factor but the angle at which the car hits the wall. I believe that the angle with which Senna hit the wall was the major influence in causing Senna's death, that and the fact that the piece of suspension pierced his visor, due to the angle at which the car hit the wall. The angle of Ralf's accident at Indy in 2004 was also the reason he injured his back so badly. Speed of course plays a role in it, but the angle plays a role as well.

basically it depends on the driver's fate and luck ,whether he rams into an "exposed " wall or one having a tyre wall as protection

I don't enjoy watching people get hurt at all but I do admit that crashes in f1 DO provide drama to a race, and often controversy. No-one can deny that. I don't watch f1 hoping to see a crash, not at all, but when accidents happen it often adds a twist to a race, and gives us all something to debate about!

A couple of rows of tyres would have prevented the fatality.
