FIA Survey Results

Recommended Posts

There's a lot of anti-schumacher sentiment around recently, so I found this interesting:

From itv:

Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher may be retiring from the sport but his popularity is as strong as ever according to the results of the FIA/AMD Formula 1 survey, published on Tuesday.

Despite twice being embroiled in controversy this season - he was found guilty of blocking the track at Monaco in May and then incurred the wrath of his fellow competitors because of his driving tactics in Hungary in August - the Ferrari superstar proved more popular than reigning world champion Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen combined.

Twenty-eight percent of the 91,000-plus fans that took part in the global survey said that Schumacher was their favourite.

Raikkonen was next up on 17%.

Surprisingly perhaps, Hungarian GP winner Jenson Button was third most popular on 8% ahead of Alonso (7%), David Coulthard (6%) and departed stars Juan Pablo Montoya (5%) and Jacques Villeneuve (4%).

That Ferrari, F1

What has driver popularity, or lack of, got to do with improving F1? Anyway, as AMD also sponsor Ferrari I expect the conspiracy theorists to be out later. The most interesting parts of the survey concern technology, driver aids and overtaking. Not the shameless plugging of F1Racing magazine.

:dam: Why did u have to go and tell them that! Yes I agree that favorite drivers isnt relevant to improving the show. I'm glad to see (from the full survey, go to the FIA website) that most people have said they want more emphasis on driver skill, and to take away driver aids

(= Sure they can (be wrong) !

The most important thing from survey is:

Driver`s role in GP (results) must be higher and Car`s role lesser.

Maybe Teams could use "draft" as is happen in NBA ?

I have the idae of "draft + auction" smth alike NBA system ...

mclaren is 21% and reno only 8%???thats intereseting to see when mclaren does not even have many strong finishes.

Only sad people choose their favorite team based on their results. I like mclaren a lot more than renault, cos I think Ron is absolutely brilliant and probably the best team principal in F1. And Flavio is annoying to many people. Plus a lot of British voters would have voted mclaren

Yeah , i too checked out the survey . Good to know most people support Schumi-Ferrari.

Its also amazing how Chelseas fan base in football is expanding rapidly... No idea why ^_^

Yep Ron and Frank have had massive influence on the sport, in fact Ron Dennis should really be 'Sir Ron' by now!

Yes, this should have been done already after the most one sided season ever by his car in '88.

Shu and Kimi are my favourite drivers RB would have been my third fave, though I admit I do like Button as well, in the absence of JPM. My least favourite driver is Alonso. I am very impressed with Kubica as well, definitely a talent for the future, as is LH

Well i dont know about that, otherwise jean todt should receive the same kind of honour too. Ron should be knighted for his huge contribution to motor sport. His personality and his impact on mclaren and on the sport is just as immense as Frank's and so he is worthy of the same honour as Frank. Stirling Moss is a 'sir', so Ron should definately be too

I dunno if I would go so far as to say he has a great personality though ;)

In further news, Alonso has said he doesn't care, talk about bitter grapes

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I want to win races, not popularity contests says Alonso

A recent survey conducted by the FIA saw Michael Schumacher outweigh his rival for the 2007 crown, Fernando Alonso, when the majority of fans polled voted for the seven time world champion in the popularity stakes, however, Alonso refuses to let the verdict upset him, in fact he claims that his goal isn

FIA need to know who they can give special treatment to so they stay fan favourites and make lots and lots of $$$ from them ofcourse...

I was going to say the same thing... you have to take into account where the survey responders are from. If as with this site, most of the members are British, the survey will favor those teams and drivers.

I am also sure that if you asked these questions before F1 was dominated by Big Red the answers would be different, people tend to jump on the winners bandwagon and become fans of the current leaders, be it sports teams, race teams or drivers.

I don't think you realise the mind set of the British public - for some reason we hate winners and always bring them down. Don't ask me why, but it's happened in pretty much every sport - snooker, tennis, F1, golf, football, to name just a few.

So if the readers were predominantly British, then the opposite of jumping on the bandwagon would occur - we would watch it roll on by & then curse it for having the indecency to be good at whatever it's good at!!
