A1-Ring restoration could be back on track

The redevelopment of Austria's defunct Formula One circuit, the A1-Ring, may be about to get back on track.

Red Bull billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz's original $800m project at Zeltweg had to be axed, but reports in the country indicate that new plans have been devised for a Grand Prix-standard circuit.

A probably lengthy process of politics and bureaucracy has now begun, but it is understood that the ultimate objective is to restore the demolished venue so that it is capable of hosting race and test sessions.

Nearly $200m has been earmarked for the project by private investors including Red Bull, Volkswagen and Audi, the reports suggest.

F1 last raced at the picturesque A1-Ring setting in 2003, before the grandstands and pit buildings were demolished in 2004.

i used to love the austrian gp, you can get good speed on the straights.

Anyone knows why were the building demolished in 04?(funds?)

Rouen? That track is almost all full throttle.... First sector these days you'd just lift a touch a few corners, and brake for the hairpin, sector 2 there is only on corner you'd brake for, and same for sector 3....

I like the drivers having to do a bit more

I think these should re-instated before A1. I'd even say that I'd like to see Brno added instead of A1.

Good question....I'll have to see if the old layout is still there..never thought that it would be gone , but the Riverside track is now under a strip mall and houses so anything is possible. I still like the new layout if the old one is gone.

A1 races were usually pretty dull. The only good memories I have are JPM & schuey racing hard in 2002, and DC driving brilliantly to beat the ferrari's in 2001

I remember that. DC does have a good record on this track and also has the record for most fastest laps by a single driver.

One of the things i remember most about the A-Ring was when Coulthard and Hakkinen both tangled on the first lap. I dont remember who was at fault but i do remember 2 McLarens running of the road.

that was pretty amusing. 1999 I believe it was, and Irvine ended up winning the race. It was DC's fault (probably a clip somehwere on youtube), DC shunted Mika from behind which sent Mika into a mini-spin

I remember that. I really felt bad for Sato as it certainly wasnt his fault and it was a big accident.

I remember sitting there thinking Sato was in a real bad way when i saw the doctors working on him.

It was a real big relief when it all turned out ok.
