Webber Not Worried

Webber still has a lot to prove, this will be a make or break year for him, to many young lions waiting for his seat.

I'm not bitter. It was brave and a very good move. However, JV had just come out of the pits fuelled up to the brim - literally, the team said they had never put so much fuel in the car all year - and JV was on brand new interns which took an age to warm up and grip sufficiently, which together worked to make JV very very slow at the time [insert JV joke here] But seriously, JV due to his experience realised there was no point fighting a much much faster car and moved over for him. Had they been on similar fuel and tyres, no way would JV have moved over, but for the circumstances I explained above, he did.

Fair enough, tyre management is a test of racecraft...but the gamble of pit for tyres and chase hard, over conserve the tyre with a calculated fuel load- that to me shows flexibility of strategy, the driver and team can demonstrate many more elements of racecraft within the race.

Yes but the tyre compound is always a mystery and it's too difficult for the fans to keep track of during a fast-paced GP. Much better to have the blistering tyres IMO as that is surely appreciated by even the casual fans.

It is virtually impossible to pass JV in anything but superior equipment... As you say, it must have been the combination of tyres/fuel load and JV moving over that made the pass possible.

There are 2 things that make webber's performances this year acceptable: 1. He had an inferior engine with BMW not putting much effort in this year 2. His car had crap aero, even the team admitted that the wind tunnel was not calibrated correctly. They may have had similar amounts of downforce but they had alot more drag than the other top cars in order to create this downforce. If you look at almost all of the races this season the Williams was well down on top end speed (engine and aerodynamic inefficiency cause this). I have been a huge Webber fan since he entered the sport with minardi and i admit that this year has been disappointing. I cant wait until next year when hopefully Williams can put a good package togeather. I think that next year is do or die for Mark, if he does not perform (at least one win / one pole and consistent result in quilifing and the races) next year then I am sad to say that he will have lost me as a fan and probally Frank Williams aswell. 2006 is Webbers year to shine otherwise i think he will be out in the F1 wilderness (only saviour may be Flavio). I do hope it does not come to this and that he does become a "top driver" next year.

It would appear that Frank is a little frustrated at the moment:

While Frank lauds his 'outstanding' qualifying talents, he does wonder whether Webber compares with F1's best in the grands prix. 'He has still to prove that,' he said.

Even when he was young he never really won anything. Did he ever win any titles? I know he raced in F3000

Webber has won races, but no championships overseas to my knowledge. He was in the best team in F3000 and still got beat.
