dribbler 6 Report post Posted July 27, 2008 Really hard to capture on video (and this one is particularly tinny) but here's TE with a bit of percussion followed by "Mombasa". Perhaps one of my favourite pieces of guitar music of all time. See him live if you get a chance. Highly enjoyable, that guy is ridiculously good. Just looked a tour dates; it seems he comes over here every six months. Slough in March would have been perfect, damn. Gonna either have to travel in November or wait until next year. I'm so loving this thread! I don't think i can top that. But i'm going to put my thinking cap on and try...........! I've got it, i think. It took me a bit of thinking but i sat around a fire one night, looking up at some stars, and it came to me. I have posted these videos before but please just watch them back to back. I promise you it is worth it. The finale is utterly breathtaking. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6pVcN8Eoyw...feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnsv9g06jac Right, that's it. My work here is done. Long live F1.

No you work is not done.... I don't dig it, as a creative person that I am, it does'nt move me.... sorry dribs, my personal feeling. Elvis moved me when he sang, he had the amazing ability to relate the lyrics that he sang meaningfully. I know that as a guitarist yorself, you must see something in this Ravi Shankir guy, maybe he was revolutionary that time. But I don't feel the music. I see Jimi hendrix there (maybe he was a fan), I saw some hot blondes, they all seem to be in a trance, but the music does'nt move me... Whats my point? What was your point? I don't know, maybe I should take time to read... it's just the music does'nt move me my friend... maybe I just don't like "that type of music"

And if you've a sense of the ironic ... That last is from a tour he did titled "1000 Years Of Popular Music" - "asked by Playboy to name the greatest songs of the past millennium, Thompson took the magazine literally, delivering a list spanning ten centuries. Passed over for publication, Thompson gave life to this incredible show. Accompanied by vocalists Judith Owen (keyboards) and Debra Dobkin (percussion), Thompson shows his prowess with styles from medieval Italian ballads to sea shanties, Broadway, Hank Williams, the Beatles, and even Britney Spears." And now that you're warmed up to him ...
F1 FANatic 1 Report post Posted August 6, 2008 hmm... just found this topic, feels like I should chime in I have to say when it comes to guitarists and musicians in general I always look at what they bring to the music they are playing. A guitarist can be Hendrix caliber but if his playing does not work with the tone he tries to set then in my opinion he is not a great musician. The guitarists I like, in no particular order, and by far not a complete list are: Tom Morrello (Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave): I think he is a pioneer in playing a guitar in ways that are not seen as traditional. He isn't just influenced by traditional rock but also by music like Hip Hop, Rap, Electronic and so on and that can be seen in his extensive use of effects to squeeze sounds out of a guitar that you would never think are possible. Brian Kahanek: I found him a while ago and am very impressed by his stuff. He plays with a lot of feeling and not only does he play intracetly but also cleanly and with a goal in mind "Fast" Eddie Clark (Motorhead): When you listen to Motorhead often most things sound like a wall of noise but if you concentrate on Clark you can tell his is a very unappreciated guitarist. Farin Urlaub (Die Aerzte): Though he is a mediocre guitar player, he himself says so even, his persona on stage and how he plays fits perfectly with the band. You can tell he has fun at it and when your part of the "Bast band in the World" you know your doing something right. (Only the Germans here will get that reference really)
