Taking over for Felipe Massa, who handled driving duties yesterday, Michael Schumacher clocked 121 laps aboard the new 248 F1, with a quickest time of 57.652. The German was behind the wheel of the second 248 built, shook down by Massa on Monday. He will carry on working at the Scuderia's private track in northern Italy tomorrow. The other Ferrari-powered machine in action this Tuesday was Red Bull Racing's new RB2, driven by tester Robert Doornbos at a damp Silverstone track. Hinting that the RB2's chronic cooling problems are beginning to get sorted out, the Dutchman was able to cover 85 laps, his best time coming at 1:25.600. With the changes that were happening around the V8's, there was a very good chance that Williams would have been in the hunt. This year is as open as I can remember for picking a winner. Jenson_Rules 0 Report post Posted February 8, 2006 Button completes 139 laps on day one of Jerez test Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello took to the track again today, continuing the intensive pre-season testing at Jerez, with Jenson completing an impressive 139 laps. It was a cold but sunny start to the morning although ambient temperatures increased to 21?C by early afternoon. Rubens and Jenson had the driving responsibilities today in chassis RA106-02 and chassis RA106-01 respectively. Both drivers spent the morning session setting up their cars as the circuit had quite low grip following two weeks of MotoGP testing. In the afternoon session, Jenson ran through a tyre evaluation programme over longer runs, alongside an aero evaluation. He completed a very impressive 139 laps today, setting the second fastest time - a 01:18.242. Rubens spent the afternoon working through a race simulation exercise followed by a short tyre evaluation, completing 114 laps and managing the third fastest time - a 01:18.609. The drivers worked on mechanical set-up all day and found some interesting directions to pursue for the rest of the test. F1 FANatic 1 Report post Posted February 8, 2006 Tuesday saw testing resume at Jerez, with four teams turning up on the first day of the week-long session.Fastest at the end of the day was Alexander Wurz (1:18.144) in the 'hybrid' Williams-Cosworth FW27 V8, as the team continued working on the 'seamless shift' gearbox programme that occupied most of their time at Valencia last week. Nico Rosberg, in the FW28, also carried out development on the unit, and finished in fourth place just six-tenths behind Wurz. Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, with second and third positions, continued to reinforce Honda's potential as a race winning outfit in the coming season. Both drivers were again running long stints, and with each setting times within half a second of Wurz (Button a mere tenth behind), managed a massive 250 laps between them over a trouble free day. Toyota continue to concentrate on Bridgestone tyre development, Ricardo Zonta and Olivier Panis taking on the workload to try a new rear construction which team insiders refer to as 'promising'. The two set fifth and sixth best times. The day also saw the first appearance of the Midland M16 in a serious test. Christijan Albers was entrusted with the Toyota-engined all-new machine, and managed a promising 70 laps on his way to a best time of 1:21.551, some three senonds away from the pace setting time. Tiago Monteiro joined his team-mate in the old EJ15b chassis and posted the final place on the timesheets. i thought that the FIA banned seamless gearboxes. any clarification? "honda" cars achieved those times on looong stints.both rosberg and Wurz achieved their times on a light fuel load. Example:-Button completed 6 long runs(10 laps or more) and the fastest time in each stint was in the "1:18:2/1:18:7" range.whereas Wurz just completed one 10 lap stint and his fastest lap in that stint was a 1'19:7.so nothing spectacular about the FW-28 times from Jerez ,though it is only in its second week of testing,whereas honda is in its 3rd week,and williams are still working on the gearbox issues,and trying to overcome the problems of the seamless shift gearbox.That explains the difference in the number of laps completed by both those teams.(honda completed double the number of laps completed by Williams) Renault warn rivals there's more to come Wednesday February 08 2006 Pf1 World Champions Renault insist they should not be judged by pre-season testing, warning they have more up their sleeve for the first race of the season in March. The Anglo-French team ran their 2006 car for the first time on January 10 and have impressed so far in testing. World Champion Fernando Alonso posted the fastest time of the week last Friday at Valencia to send an ominous warning to Renault's title rivals. But technical director Bob Bell has revealed Renault will be even stronger come the first race in Bahrain next month, thanks to a raft of improvements he has planned. Bell said: "We will introduce development packages through the season. That will help maximise our production resources, and will allow us to have a firm idea of the step forward we make each time. "We aim to have new parts on the car at every race. For example, the aero package on the car at the moment is quite different from what will be used at the first race. "An update package just before Bahrain will bring us a good performance gain." Bell also declared last year's Championship-winning car flawless and claimed the main threat to Renault's superiority comes in the shape of new rules. New smaller engines have been imposed for 2006 but Bell hopes that major change will not derail Renault's chances. "The 2005 car did not have any real weaknesses, as our Championship victory showed," he added. "For 2006, our challenge was to understand the impact of the engine regulations on the chassis design, to include those new challenges in our projects goals, and to pursue our development path under stable chassis regulations.
