Do You Support The Driver Or The Team?

Recommended Posts

i used to support mclaren when mika was driving and continued to support them after kiml took over the job...when they had speed they did not have the reliability so that made it quite exciting...kimi started at the back of the grid in japan and took the victory and so on..like so many race...you all probably remember hakkinens crying....so they looked to me quite emotional..but people call kim iceman and mika had the same kind of image....

and for some reason i never like alonso..it seems to me that he did not really deserve none of the WDC...some people may argue though...but it is just my opinion...

anyway .... after kimi left mclaren i realised i actaully support the driver but not team...

so what do you think guys..do you support teams or drivers?

Both; I support drivers such as Button, Webber and Massa, but also support Williams regardless of who drives for them.

I'm a Button fan, and I also like Honda. So its more or less both.

However, I've always loved McLaren, and I know it was years before my time but the whole Jim Clark/Colin Chapman Lotus team has always appealed to me too.

I agree..... not necessarily with your choices in teams and drivers  ... but I too support certain teams and in other cases certain drivers. Both do not have to be together.

More importantly .... there are teams and drivers to cheer against....

Here we go again.........

I'm pretty much just a Fisi fan now. It was both Fisi and Renault as a whole for the last two years but Alonso has been replaced with someone I don't know too well.

Still support both really.

I spport Ferrari no matter who drives for them(it would be hard to support Alonso if he came over to the red horse but i would give it my best effort)

As drivers in other cars, i support NK(patriotism) and Kubica(seems a good talent for future(hopefully in a ferrari).

Neither. I try to be impartial. Haven't supported any team since the days of Hesketh (be upstanding), or any driver since Vittorio (oh my God I'm going to crash).

Why don't you start? everyone has some bias towards a driver, like when you start melbourne in 15 days(yeah finally a 2 weeks till first practice), who do you WANT to cross the finish line in P1? or which team, there was to some one otherwise watching it is quite useless.

This was my philosophy as well until the First Advent of Lewis Hamilton. Barring that exception to the rule, I do make a distiction between good and bad drivers. I'll praise Alonso one day and knock him the next, if his on-track actions warrant it. As for teams, they are all so corporate these days that I have a hard time liking one over another. Hesketh, as Russ cited, is a good example of a team with attitude and character that a man can support with pride. Who wouldn't support a team created as a finger in the eye to the 'establishment' and centered around the partying ways of Lord Hesketh and James Hunt! Jordan was the last team to truly have 'character' and that was only really in their early days.

EDIT: Just to clarify something that tends to get blurred: A person can distinguish between a good and bad driver or team without being baised. Bias only comes into play when you are arguing from a losing position. For instance, if I steadfastly argued in favor of Alonso's brake-checking, in contravention to all common sense, I would be biased. On the other hand, If I continually recognized Alonso's superior racecraft, that would not necessarily be 'bias'.

Well I haven't much to add to this discussion as I've admited my unconditional love for Renault many times. That doesn't mean that I don't support any drivers, but confronted to the choice of supporting Alonso which i consider the best driver that has appeared in many years (besides MS) and supporting Renault, I chose to stay with my all-life love  . Still, I will be happy whenever Alonso wins, and when Liuzzi wins too! What? What do you mean IF Liuzzi ever wins??? Of course he will!!!!

(Sorry, time to take my medicine)

F1 must surely be much more exciting to watch and give you highs and lows if you support a driver/team!

Driver for me. Was a huge Damon Hill fan, but when Button came on the scene straight after Hill's retirement, it didnt take me long to admire Jensons driving and ever since i have been convinced that he can be a world champion, in my eyes he seems to get better each year.

Like seeing williams and mclaren doing well, cos i think Ron and Frank are pure genius's, their achievements are incredible. But how i feel after a race will always depend on how JB did

I support McLaren and therefore whoever drives for them but I'll be the first to knock them if they screw up. And just because I support McLaren doesn't mean I don't think Ferrari's domination at the beginning of the millenium was fantastic, or Renaults victory over the might of McLaren and Ferrari with a considerably smaller budget wasn't a momentous achievement.

I'm much in the same boat as Autumnpuma when it comes to drivers, I judge them on their performances, not who they drive for.

Not at all, Jem. I still derive a great deal of pleasure from seeing, say, Taku do really well in a race or Kimi drive a blinder. It means I'm not blinkered in my views (I hope). As I intimated earlier, I was a rabid Hesketh fan and followed their every move because, as Mike said, they poked F1 in the eye with a big pointy stick. They were fun. I'm no fan of the corporate nature of things these days. And I just can't warm to the PR speak that emanates from the drivers. If they were to speak their mind more often then maybe I'd change my mind, but at the moment I enjoy the sport. I was happy for Jenson in Hungary because I think he deserved the win, but I was equally happy for Massa (who I still don't rate highly) and his wins. I can enjoy the spectacle without being partisan.

I pretty much agree with ya Russ, although I bleed Ferrari red, I also like to watch a good race or an exceptional performance by an also ran, Sato in a Jordon in Japan is what racing is all about. I will add this caveate there are some that I won't root for ever, but it doesn't mean that I don't reconise their skills.

well i envy you then, cos it means you dont have to endure the extreme frustration when your fave driver has a bad day!

But he also won't get that high you got when Button won his gp.

I guess I support the driver, cos Hamilton drives for McLaren so I support them and Button drives for Honda so I support them, though I support McLaren more than I support Honda.

Just the driver, that's all. And no one else since Michael, although i suspect Lewis will endear me if he proves to be a racer.

In terms of teams I am a McLaren fan

In terms of Drivers, I support Alonso, and the British Drivers (Although I lost a bit of my respect for button after his contract fiasco)

I guess I probably follow the drivers more then the teams. At the moment it would be Mark Webber (for pure patriotism and the fact he doesn't imo have the usual ego problem associated with many F1 drivers) and Lewis Hamilton as I really think this guy looks the goods and also so far doesn't have the ego problem - let's hope he doesn't join the dark side.
