Ah, Romance....

71 posts in this topic

My wife and I were talking about romantic music the other night and she mentioned that Pachabell's Canon was, to her, the most 'romantic' piece of music ever written. She asked me what I considered to be musically 'romantic' and my answer was not as...enlightened....as hers, I suppose!

So, my forum friends, what musically exemplifies 'Love' to you? Never fear that your answer will be silly because I'll tell you mine..and rest assured that your answer will be far better than mine! (unless you're Jem and you list a Westlife song :P ) Oh, there probably is a thread about this already, but I'm too lazy to search right now....

I'm particularly interested in what DOF will have to say. He is, after all, an escaped robot from the Toyota factory and it will be educational to see what his electronic and metal brain will come up with!

Okay, my rather hokey contribution would be 'When you say nothing at all'. The Alison Krauss version.

My song choice would be 'I got a woman' by Ray Charles.

well

I got a woman way over town that's good to me oh yeah

Say I got a woman way over town good to me oh yeah

She give me money when Im in need

Yeah she's a kind old friend indeed

I got a woman way over town that's good to me oh yeah

She saves her lovin early in the morning just for me oh yeah

She saves her lovin early in the morning just for me oh yeah

She saves her lovin just for me oh she love me so tenderly

I got a woman way over town that's good to me oh yeah

Sax Solo

She's there to love me both day and night

Never grumbles or fusses always treats me right

Never runnin in the streets and leavin me alone

She knows a womans place is right there now in her home

I got a woman way over town that's good to me oh yeah

Say I got a woman way over town that's good to me oh yeah

Oh she's my baby now don't you understand

Yeah and I'm her lover man

I got a woman way over town that's good to me oh yeah

A Don't ya know she's alright

A Don't ya know she's alright

she's alright she's alright

Whoa yeah oh yeah oh

I loathe Pachelbel's Canon. I think romance would be precluded by me vomiting in a corner somewhere.

I'd go for the "Karelia Suite" by Sibelius as it has some good tempo changes ;-)

Otherwise anything by the Love Walrus himself, Mr Barry White.

My Love by Paul McCartney...

And when I go away

I know my heart can stay with my love , its understood

Its in the hands of my love , and my love does it good

Wo-wo-wo-wo-wo-wo , my love does it good

And when the cupboards bare

Ill still find something there with my love

Its understood , its everywhere with my love

And my love does it good

Wo-wo-wo-wo-wo-wo , my love does it good

Oh I love oh wo......my love

Only my love holds the other key to me

Oh....my love oh...my love

Only my love does it good to me

(solo)

Wo-wo-wo-wo-wo-wo , my love does it good

Dont ever ask me why , I never say goodbye to my love

Its understood , its everywhere with my love

And my love does it good

Wo-wo-wo-wo-wo-wo , my love does it good

----------

This is the song we dance at our wedding... ^_^

"Our song" is called "because you loved me" - the lyrics are spot on for us. Sadly it is by Celine Dion (its the only song of hers I like, but what the hell.... :) )

For all those times you stood by me

For all the truth that you made me see

For all the joy you brought to my life

For all the wrong that you made right

For every dream you made come true

For all the love I found in you

I'll be forever thankful baby

You're the one who held me up

Never let me fall

You're the one who saw me through through it all

You were my strength when I was weak

You were my voice when I couldn't speak

You were my eyes when I couldn't see

You saw the best there was in me

Lifted me up when I couldn't reach

You gave me faith 'coz you believed

I'm everything I am

Because you loved me

You gave me wings and made me fly

You touched my hand I could touch the sky

I lost my faith, you gave it back to me

You said no star was out of reach

You stood by me and I stood tall

I had your love I had it all

I'm grateful for each day you gave me

Maybe I don't know that much

But I know this much is true

I was blessed because I was loved by you

You were my strength when I was weak

You were my voice when I couldn't speak

You were my eyes when I couldn't see

You saw the best there was in me

Lifted me up when I couldn't reach

You gave me faith 'coz you believed

I'm everything I am

Because you loved me

You were always there for me

The tender wind that carried me

A light in the dark shining your love into my life

You've been my inspiration

Through the lies you were the truth

My world is a better place because of you

You were my strength when I was weak

You were my voice when I couldn't speak

You were my eyes when I couldn't see

You saw the best there was in me

Lifted me up when I couldn't reach

You gave me faith 'coz you believed

I'm everything I am

Because you loved me

You were my strength when I was weak

You were my voice when I couldn't speak

You were my eyes when I couldn't see

You saw the best there was in me

Lifted me up when I couldn't reach

Aye, that would be one of my choices too, especially some of the live versions he has done of it.

Out of Country songs, I always liked 'Take the Wings Off Me', nice alternative name for losing one's virginity :D However, I don't think it was the Reba McIntyre version I liked, but I can't remember who it was. Crystal Gayle's 'When I Dream' is very good live too, made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Always liked 'Stand By Me' as well.

Bryan Adams - 'Have you ever loved a woman'. Ahh. A loving embrace, the sweet smell of the base of the neck, a gentle nuzzle of the ear, the twang of a bra strap. Heaven.

And for some reason most stuff from Joe c#cker, 'Unchain my heart', 'Sorry seems to be the hardest word', 'Up where we belong' 'n stuff.

But I have a theory about our Joe, words contained in everything about him and his songs lead to hornification:

'Heart' = OK. That's enough of the romance....

'Hardest' = see where I'm going?

'UP where we belong' = Obviously, a clear reference to the designated target area.

And of course, his name, 'c#cker'. How can you fail?

And if you mention 'Pachabell's Canon' in Pabloh's part of the world, she'll be more interested in grabbing it than hearing it :P

 That made my day! Gold.

Good songs from you all....and not one Westlife! James, you are quite correct, country has a great many love songs that really speak to the heart...the older 70s and 80s stuff perhaps more than today, but that's just my opinion...

So many...love is not easy to capture, or explain...so many songs are needed to view the different angles and try to get a glimpse of love.

Some of them might be:

Bach, "Air on the G String": In fact, Bach was accused of being too mathematic in his approach, too perfect. His work was inspired by religion, not by mundane love. But listen to this "Air", for example. The sweetness of that violin brings tears to my eyes from pure, unadultered beauty. This is love, a love made of notes and silences. Bach is my favorite, in case you didn't notice.

Smetana, "The Moldau": lovemaking, classical music version. It's about a river, but its a perfect course in expressiveness.

Lou Reed, "Perfect Day": because all of us had a perfect day sometime. And love is usually the culprit.

Procol Harum, "A whiter shade of pale": don't get any of the covers, their version is the one to capture the right mood. The covers tend to highlight too much how corny this song can be.

Elvis Presley, "Love Me Tender": a great lullaby for the woman you love. Sing it to her softly while she falls asleep. Tuck her in. Light a cigarette, and look at the night through the window. You are a lucky man.

Doors, "The Crystal Ship": they posed as the great poets and artists, I liked The Who better, but in this particular song, Morrison really was up to his claims.

Beatles, "I'm so tired": When love rears up it's ugly head...

The Platters, "Unchained melody": again, don't get any other version. This one is truly unchained.

And so, oh so many more...

Yeah, I am too corny.

"Regrets" by Anthony Phillips.

Is that a song all about Hackett resentment?

I think that Otis Redding takes some beating when it comes to romantic music. I just adore 'Since I've Been Loving You'. It is a heart achingly beautiful piece of music that brings any woman to her knees (advantageous if you are stood).

And on not such a serious note, two pieces of crude music by Frank Zappa spring to mind when thinking of the complete opposite of romantic music. One is 'Dinah-Moe Humm' (a song about a woman who doesn't believe any man can make her orgasm) and 'Ms Pinky' (a song about a rubber sex toy). Women will hate both pieces. I think they are rip roaringly hilarious;

I couldn't say where she's coming' from,

But I just met a lady

named Dinah-Moe Humm

She stroll on over, say look here, bum,

I got a forty dollar bill say

you can't make me cum

(Y'jes can't do it)

She made a bet with her

sister who's a little

bit dumb

She could prove it any

time all men was scum

I don't mind that she called me a bum,

But I knew right away she

was really gonna cum

(So I got down to it)

I whipped off her bloomers'n

stiffened my thumb

An' applied rotation on her sugar plum

I poked 'n stroked till

my wrist got numb

But I still didn't hear

no Dinah-Moe Humm,

Dinah-Moe Humm

Dinah-Moe Humm

Dinah-Moe Humm

Where's this Dinah-Moe

Comin' from

I done spent three hours

An' I ain't got a crumb

From the Dinah-Moe, Dinah-Moe, Dinah-Moe

From the Dinah-Moe Humm

Got a spot that gets me hot, ow!

An' you ain't been to it

(No no no no!)

Got a spot that gets me hot, ow!

An' you ain't been to it

(No no no!)

Got a spot that gets me hot

But you ain't been to it

(No no no no no!)

Got a spot that gets me hot

But you ain't been to it

'Cause I can't get into it

Unless I get out of it

An' I gotta get out of it

Before I get into it

'Cause I never get into it

Unless I get out of it

An' I gotta be out of it

To get myself into it

(She looked over at me with a glazed eye

And some bovine perspiration

on her upper lip area

And she said . . . )

Just get me wasted

An' you're half-way there

'Cause if my mind's tore up,

Then my body don't care

I rubbed my chinny-chin-chin

An' said my-my-my

What sort of thing

Might this lady get high upon?

I checked out her sister

Who was holdin' the bet

An' wondered what kind of trip

The young lady was on

The forty dollar bill

didn't matter no more

When her sister got nekkid

an' laid on the floor

[ Lyrics found at www.mp3lyrics.org/VGn ]

She said Dinah-Moe might win the bet

But she could use a

little ______ if I wasn't

done yet

I told her . . .

Just because the sun

Want a place in the sky

No reason to assume

I wouldn't give her a try

So I pulled on her hair

Got her legs in the air

An' asked if she had any

cooties on there

(Whaddya mean cooties!

No cooties on me!)

She was buns-up kneelin'

BUNS UP!

I was wheelin' an dealin'

WHEELIN' AN' DEALIN' AN' OOOOH!

She surrender to the feelin'

SHE SWEETLY SURRENDERED

An' she started in to squealin'

Dinah-Moe watched from

the edge of the bed

With her lips just a-twitchin'

an' her face gone red

Some drool rollin' down

From the edge of her chin

While she spied the condition

Her sister was in

She quivered 'n quaked

An' clutched at herself

While her sister made a joke

About her mental health

'Till Dinah-Moe finally

Did give in

But I told her

All she really needed

Was some discipline . .

And Ms Pinky;

I got a girl with a little rubber head.

Rinse her out ever night just before I go to bed.

She never talk back, like a lady might do,

and she looks like she loves it every time I get through.

And her name is p.. i.. n k y.

P.. i.. n.. no lie.

K.. y.. me-oh-my.

$69.95 -- give her a try!

P.. i.. n k y.

P.. i.. n.. I cry.

K.. y.. don't be shy.

$69.95 boy -- give her a try!

Her eyes is all shut, in a ecstasy face.

You can cram it down her throat, people, any old place.

Throw the little switch on her battery pack.

You can poot it, you can shoot it 'til your wife gets back.

And her name is p.. i.. n k y.

P.. i.. n.. I cry.

K.. y.. don't be shy.

$69.95 boy -- give her a try!

I got a girl with a little rubber head.

Oh, and Quiet One, thanks for the reminder of Air on a G String - not heard it for years - and great music indeedy.....

Another romantic number, especially with ref to comments (agreed) about some great Country and Western, the amazing lady that sang '....make your brown eyes blue' (I think). All I remember about her was that she must have been created from pure breast tissue  gobsmackingly beautiful woman - my multiple orgasms just thinking about her are rendering my keyboard useless....

Don't give me that - you always go asleep before me, being older & not able to take the pace

That was Crystal Gayle, who I mentioned a few posts further up. Indeed, a lovely lady, that hair down to the floor too - delicious.

Just for you Med - http://www.korenzailckas.com/uploaded_imag...yle1-755223.jpg

As I say, I saw her live (I know, I know, strange muscial tastes and all that :D ) and she just sent a shiver down my spine. A voice to match the looks, me thinks.

Edit: Family Pack, my arse - get a handy pack. Waste not, want not :whistling:
