michelfx 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2006 Indeed it is!I think Mclaren will be a force later in the year, its basically gonna be a repeat of 2004 for them this year, but maybe more competative from the putset, just not enought to challenge! can anybody tell me if Mercedes has ever had any previous succes with V8 engines. For instance, we know that Ford/cosworth are experts in that dept. I think that Benz and Bmw might sruggle a little

Jenson_Rules 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2006 JV a full second faster than PDLR. I know this is the mclarens first outing but not a great start lets be honest, since we are expecting the top teams to prob be about 1 sec quicker than BMW!
cavallino 2 Report post Posted January 23, 2006 Canadian Jacques Villeneuve topped the times on the first day of this week's major test at the Barcelona circuit as the new McLaren made its track debut. Villeneuve, driving BMW's new F1.06 car unveiled last week, finished with a best time of 1:17.242, the Canadian being the only driver to lap in less than 78 seconds. It was the first time the new BMW was on track with rival cars, having only done private testing in Valencia last week. Former World Champion Villeneuve worked alongside teammate Nick Heidfeld, who was at the wheel of the hybrid car fitted with a V8 engine as the team wait to have the second new chassis ready. Spanish driver Pedro de la Rosa was the man in charge of completing the first test with the new McLaren-MP4-21. De la Rosa said first impressions of the V8-powered car were good, but the test driver could only complete 19 laps before the Mercedes engine gave up. De la Rosa finished over a second behind Villeneuve, with Briton Gary Paffett splitting the two in the hybrid McLaren MP20 fitted with a V10 engine. Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya will drive the new car at the Spanish circuit on Tuesday and Wednesday with Finland's Kimi Raikkonen testing on Thursday and Friday. Today's times: Pos Driver Team Tyres Time Laps 1. Villeneuve BMW-Sauber (M) 1:17.242 84 2. Paffett McLaren-Mercedes (M) 1:18.066 74 3. de la Rosa McLaren-Mercedes (M) 1:18.247 19 4. I know this is the mclarens first outing but not a great start lets be honest, since we are expecting the top teams to prob be about 1 sec quicker than BMW! Don't be fooled Ben, JV's fastest lap today was genuine pace. At 1:17.242, it is the fastest lap yet by ANY V8 powered car at Jerez. Sources: http://www.speedtv.com/articles/auto/formulaone/21676/ http://www.pitpass.com/src/seasons/2006/testing/jerez.php Don't get me wrong, I don't expect BMW to stay at the top, but it's great news for the Team, and even better news for JV. Seems the new v8 engines suit his style very well indeed.......
Jenson_Rules 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2006 huh, no but generally speaking the BMW is not going to be able to match Ferrari, Renault or Honda this year who im predicting to be the BIG 3, as it were! plus the V8's have come a long way since they were last at Barcelona so they will be faster, but JV's time is very good nonethe less, I think mclaren are gonna struggle at first! Sorry Ben, you're right, I got it mixed up, thought they were at Jerez!!!!!!! Not my fault though - I read the news on the SPEED website and it said they were at Jerez. Even the headline on the TotalF1.com forum shows "Villeneuve Paces Jerez Test With New BMW". They've corrected it now though, so no more confusion!!!! YHR 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2006 Testing is just testing, but the BMW-Sauber package may be more competitive then everyone thought. They and JV have the fastest V8 to date. Over the week we will see if the Mclaren, and Honda can get ahead of that mark. JV felt the car was fast and very encouraged that it was a good platform to set up on. Good news is that they are setting the mark that others will have to push past. Makes it much more fun then always coming up 2 seconds short!!!! Great for team moral. Even if they get a sniff at leading the pack, I'm happy. Do I expect them to be at the top by the start of the season, of course not. But if they are within a second, it would be a great start. With such a dramatic change, it really is quite open. Who knows who will come out on top.

BTW,JV'S time today was 0.6 sec slower than fastest V8 time "this winter" by the toyota powered Zonta(1st week of december) what is most impressive is the reliability of the F1.06 package more than 250 laps without a major problem.... it was a 5 lap stint by JV,so not exactly on fumes

ben_3001 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2006 BMW-Sauber seem to be definitly doing amazing! Hope they keep it that way!! Looks like JV was running on fumes for a few laps....Glad GP is doing me proud Test programme/Remarks: The engineers evaluated different aerodynamic configurations. Nick made some starts to gather respective data. In the afternoon, he tested several tyre specifications. To start with, Jacques worked on the basic set-up of the new car. Then, the engineers made some aerodynamic measurements. What comes next: Testing will continue tomorrow with Nick and Jacques. Jacques Villeneuve Chassis: BMW Sauber F1.06 Engine: BMW P86 V8 Test kilometres today: 384 km Number of laps today: 83 Fastest lap: 1:17.230 min (lap 66) Nick Heidfeld Chassis: Sauber C24B Engine: BMW P86 V8 Test kilometres today: 379 km Number of laps today: 82 Fastest lap: 1:18.471 min (lap 77) -bmwsauber- Being that he did a couple of very fast laps in a row (1:17.249 and then a couple laps after 1:17.242 and then again a 1:17.230) and that the laps in which he was doing them, he was exactly on fumes, he might of been light but doubt on fumes. nojvnof1 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2006 Well well well. Very pleased for Jacques and the team, very pleased. Having said that this was the first day for the new McLaren and the other teams will join this week. I don't know how many days JV will be testing the new car for in relation to Nick, but seeing as there is no comparison between Jacques and Nick in this car at Barcelona, I'll hold back on plaudits until we see how Nick goes, although having said that, JV seems to have set a relatively competitive time and I'm happy to see the car running rather quickly and reliably. Although .6 behind the fastest time set by Toyota, that's not exactly an insurmountable gap and this was BMW's first test day there. With quali as it is now, low fuel runs will be used in the first two little segments, perhaps that's the explanation as to why he was on low fuel. His fast laps look consistent though, which is a good sign. De la Rosa said first impressions of the V8-powered car were good, but the test driver could only complete 19 laps before the Mercedes engine gave up. 19 laps?? That's not good, not good at all.
