I Made The Right Move Says Alonso

Recommended Posts

Even though he will be leaving the team that has taken him to his first world title and look set to help deliver his second successive crown, Renault champion Fernando Alonso is convinced he has made the right move in signing a deal to race for the Mercedes powered McLaren team in the 2007 championship season.

According to reports in the Italian press, the Spaniard is not concerned that McLaren are not completely up to speed with Renault as he is fully convinced that they are the one team on the grid to turn any problem around in a record amount of time and that come next year, the Woking based squad will be the ones everyone will be striving to beat.

We have seen glimpses of their strengths in recent years and Alonso is confident that the second season of V8 power will see their strengths come to the fore and that is the reason why he opted to sign a deal with them as early as he did, that and the fact that there is really nothing left to do at Renault after securing the crown last year, and more than likely this year too.

A hint of Valentino Rossi with those remarks... "there's nothing more to achieve" I like it! Bring it on!! :clap3:

I don't buy it. There must be another reason, rather than just 'theres nothing more to achieve', otherwise what if he wins the title at mclaren in 2007, will he jump to another team again?? I dont think so

Good point. I think that he must be motivated by the fact that McLaren haven't won the WDC since '99 and he would like to be the man who does it for them, Schumacher esque.

Presumably you are implying the unknown future of Renault and i guess this must be a factor in Falonso's decision too.

if FA wants to bring the title back to Merc Schumacher esque, he still has to wait 21 years

Its all about diplomacy on Alonsos behalf and one should not jump to conclusions over Renaults future over the fact that he, or Symmonds (if this turns out to be true) leaves.

Alonso probably thinks he has better chances of becoming multiple WDC at McLaren than at Renault, or at any other team for that matter.

A typical McLaren fan? I did not know that we are all the same? So what is the typical Renault fan like then?

Triple salary, double the team budget, uncertain future of Renault. Am I the only one who sees the parellals to Schumacher 96?

They enter, work hard, win everything, and pull out. That's what they do

In the meantime they sell loads of street cars what's wrong with that?

It's the only reason why companies are in F1, they hire really smart and passionate individuals to run their teams

What don't you understand mr. prejudice?

maybe im missing the point here but alonso won last years title on skill obviously but also reliability - KR had the skill to win it but not the reliaibilty

in my humble opinion if KR had had the reliability that FA did then he most probably would now be world champion - why would you give up a good thing that youve got :eusa_think:

Pull out...not a very manly thing to do.

First Toyota, now this. F1 has lost its masculinity.

I think there are a few reasons why Alonso is leaving McLaren, and I don't believe it's ALL to do with money, although I think it played a minor role.

The combination of the fact that Renault's future is not that secure in F1 played a role, but in all honesty, I just think Alonso wants a new challenge. He's been under Flavio's wing since '01 when he was loaned out to Minardi and has become Renault's number one with the aim of winning both titles. They achieved it last year and may very well do it again this year. Now it's time for a new challenge to keep the motivation up. He's still very young with hopefully a very long future in the sport. It would be a pity to see him leave the sport before he should due to lack of motivation.

Indeed. It astounds me that when a driver moves, most people's first reaction is to say it's ALL about money without actually knowing a tiny amount of the facts. Sure, money mostly plays a role, but it's not the same massive role for each and every driver who moves.
