dear labrador, 9 Reinas is very good film but stay far from the US version: disastrous! I highly recommend the new Oscar winner from andres-and-I-land: El secreto de sus ojos. Excellent with a very clever and unespected end.

Yes, I had posted a query about this film a month back and Andres gave me a little background. This was a great win given the stiff competition. The Academy Award will of course make for better box office receipts and DVD sales and rentals. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Old Clint spent a good part of his career starring in, and often directing, more than a few forgettable films.

Oh dear. I'm reminded of Paint Your Wagon. Clint sings. 'nuff said.

I must say that Unforgiven was a damned fine film and a natural, modern progression of the spaghetti-western genre which had become rather stale. The re-working of 3:10 to Yuma built upon lessons learned from Unforgiven. We can differ in our opinion about what makes a great movie, but there's no denying that Clint has furthered a genre that he originally had a hand in creating.

My favourite Clint film is Heartbreak Ridge. Love it

Speaking of westerns, you can't beat a John Wayne movie. Watch True Grit.

Also loved the uncut version of Soldier Blue. Made me cry.

Ah, the big man hisself. Rooster Cogburn is pretty good too. Something about appearing with Hepburn causes a man to suddenly go from a good actor to a great one. Bogey, Wayne and Fonda to name but a few...

I saw Alice in Wonderland... I was disappointed, it was crap... The end!

Words can't describe how much I dislike Johnny Depp's acting these days. A few strange parts are good for range, but he's become the new Jim Carrey.

I had the mis-fortune of watching Public Enemies over the weekend. I don't expect Mr. Depp to come across as the next Olivier but he does have "movie star" qualities which can carry a film. However, his habit of walking through roles and getting a fat paycheck is becoming very annoying. And your equating him with Jim Carrey is apt.

Saw 2 David Lynch movies, one from each extreme of his spectrum.

'Inland Empire' was totally incomprehensible, extremely whimsical. I sat through it just to test my patience (I've ADHD, so anything to make it go away).

The other, 'The Straight Story'. Stays true to its name. It meanders along leisurely and beautifully. A simple but nice movie. Of course, even then you see a few flashes of Lynch's fondness for the wacky/bizarre. And no, it isn't a movie about the rapidly diminishing species called heterosexuals.

A Straight story is one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen. An all time favorite.

Watched "The Hurt Locker" and "The Green Zone", two almost opposite takes on the Iraq war. They still show the troubles of mainstream movie industry when it comes to touch deep political content. Both fail. One is a pseudo psychological take on a soldier a la "Apocalypse Now", but so shallow it hurts ("The Hurt Locker"), the other addresses the lack of fundament of the Iraq war, but decides to blame it on a rogue advisor, turning a whole web of complex agendas into a naif conspiracy theory (America going on full scale war because of one guy's lies? Come on!)

x1 Brucey, saw it last weekend in 3D, absolutley brilliant - and funny to watch people try to waft insects away that look inches from you

@ Steph in particular - you're a martial arts fan? We've just watched Ong Bak, you have to see it, one of the best of all time - no special effects, completley unbe-feking-lievable. And a good story (for martial arts films!), and I'm sure you'll think the lead guy is fitter than a butcher's dog ^_^ I 'play' at, and my son does Kuk Sool, but this was on another planet.

Ong Bak,? what a movie title. I'll check it out...

It's a Thai movie. So that's why "what a movie title". Tony Jaa is awesome. Ong Bak 2 is good as well, but not as good as 1.

If anyone wants a chop-socky movie, here's one: "Blood and Bone". Michael Jai White is one hell of a motherfu*kin' nigga (yes, I get the irony of his last name). Do catch him in 'Black Dynamite' as well. It's a spoof of the blaxploitation movies of yesteryears.

Speaking of blaxploitation... Pam Grier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jay - In all honesty you couldn't go 3 rounds with Pam Grier. Hell, you would be dead in an hour!

True. I'm too committed to stop watching it, though. Would seem like I wasted too many hours on it for nothing and it seems to be moving toward some kind of grand finale.

*Thinks hard & long as to whether Dave is indulging in double entendre here. Decides he isn't.*

Depends on 3 rounds of what.

The new Robin Hood looks awesome. As does Prince of Persia.

Now they really need to do Assassins Creed as a movie.

Another Jap movie: Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl. Totally insane movie, with outlandish action, cheap effects and gobs and gobs of blood. I've made up my mind to like it.

In the same vein, another Jap movie: Machine Girl. Same description as above.

Y'know, my 10 year old started watching that animated series 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' and I enjoyed it as well. After coming out of James Cameron's 'Avatar' we saw a standee for the live action version of the Airbender animated series. Both of us are looking forward to that one. Not oscar material certainly, but it looks to be fun. And fun is worth the price of admission.

I don't like Argentinian movies. Usually the actors/actresses suck, and the stories and characters are broadly painted. But I loved this movie. Definitely watch if if you have the chance. Well, at least I would recommend it to you if you were Argentinian. I don't know if the movie is too localist for other people's tastes.

I watched El Secreto de sus Ojos recently on DVD and loved it as well. Ricardo Darin is awesome, I think the best movies I've watched in Spanish in the last many years are his like 9 Reinas and El hijo de la novia.

May/would you recommend others maybe not so famous Darin films?

Two very good non US movies I remember are Katyn and Das Leben der Anderen. There's a very good story behind the actual film in both cases around the directors.

Recently watched "Kick-a##". Funny in parts but in total quite poor and rather weird too. I went to the cinema to see a film billed as a comedy and it shows a child getting seriously beat up by the "villain" of the movie (it's a superhero movie). Pretty weird and not really what I was expecting.

Heard a 10 minute review/conversation about this film on BBC World News this past week and based on that couldn't tell if I would enjoy it or be repulsed. Perhaps you've answered my question.
