It would depend on the circumstances. For example, Jean Todt can't possibly hire him, since he's paying Kimi a fortune as it is, and Kimi and Nando together is a no no. But if I were anyone apart from Ron and Jean (and possibly Mario), then yes I probably would hire Alonso. Renault should definitely get him back.

It could be that they can use Alonso as a negotiating tool againts Kimi Mr Murray Walker and see who's the cheapest for 2009 (when Kimi's contract ends)...

To be honest beating DC isn't all that hard but Mark's qualifying performances aren't exactly thrashings. A guy who sets his car up for one laps and is incapable of getting a decent race setup on the flipside outqualifying one of the weakest single lap drivers out there and goes for race pace isn't much of an achievement. Besides, DC came out on top overall this year, didn't he?

To answer your question, It does depend on how much money Fernando wants, But he is such a gifted driver and he is unbelieveable at setting up a car, He is the most complete driver in F1 after Mark Webber.

Let me see. Nobody doubts he is one of the top drivers currently available. He is the only 2 times WDC available. He is not only fast, but one of the most complete as he knows how to setup a car, knows when to go fast and when to save the engine/tires. He had to work hard to earn every one of his achievements: from Minardi to Renault, becoming the favourite at Renault and fighting back in McLaren. Yes, he did it sometimes in a most annoying way, so what?

Now, if you would dismiss all that because "he whines too much" or because "he is too egocentric" then Yuji Ide would be perfect for your team. And no, I would not work for your team even if you paid me a billion dollars. You would not last in F1 more than a couple of hours.

What do you mean by that? He HAD competition in every team he went to! He was never the favourite bar a short "summer of love" at Renault that ended when he said he was going to McLaren. Everybody talks as if he was always the number one and pampered beyond measure. Renault preferred Trulli and Fisi at first over him. He earned his respect on the track. He started at Minardi, he didn't come as saviour to Renault, and Renault didn't build a winning car just for him. Nobody can say Alonso ever had an easy path in F1.

Yes, Lewis was the closest competition he ever got in a team. That should say something about him. Nor Trulli nor Fisi were exactly unexperienced amateurs when he arrived at Renault. Yes, he acts too much like a spoilt kid and he can be unsufferable most of the time with his constant whinning (fueled by the Spanish media). Lewis is exactly the same, only his arrogant claims mixed with pathetic excuses are fueled by the British media. Would you not hire Lewis?

If you cannot manage an egocentric driver then expect to get only the leftovers.

I was being flipant Dof. My polite way of agreeing with you that those you mentioned could turn on their gripes (Mansell in particular, though loved him behind the wheel), but that I think Alonso is far to quick (quicker?) to blame/whinge/cry foul.

Well, the winding up is fun! But no, I do honestly think that Alonso created a lot of his own problems. Definitely Alonso had competition before and he can cope fine with it. But when he is challenged by his own team mate he seems to create problems for himself. It just seems to me that most people with connections to McLaren say that Ron might have favourites but that he generally does ensure equal equipment as far as possible, and would certainly never sabotage a driver. Whereas even Pat Symmonds says that Alonso creates his own mental and attitude problems when a team mate is (sometimes) faster or as fast as him.

And this is why there should be more bitch slappings in F1. Alonso, Lewis and all the rest wouldn't whine anywhere near as much if they got an almighty bitch slapping every time they did. Either that or use the 3-gotcha handicap principal.

Nope. Although my answer would have been different at the beginning of the last season.

If I were a team principal I would look at the events that had taken place this year and grimace a bit - would I want to take that on? Before we get into the usual "it was Lewis" "it was Ron" stuff, putting that to one side, I would still want to give him another year and see how things pan out before making that commitment.

I would also want to have a look at my budget - implications from comments from Renault and Toyota was that he was after a big package. Maybe rightly so, but these days as Ralf has found out there are a lot of good, cheap drivers in the wings and someone else might be looking to find another Hamilton.

If I were a sponsor I would want to keep my distance from Alonso for the moment (unless I was based heavily in Spain) - the fall-out from the vents of this season are just to great/painful and would again want to see how Alonso goes over the next year before coughing up the money.

Don't deny his driving skills but everything's still very "fresh" and even if the rumours about blackmail, etc are untrue I would still want to keep a watching brief on the situation.

It is also interesting to compare him with Schumacher/Hakkinen - I wonder if Schui (Michael ) or Mika came back into the market how many offers they would get in comparison
