Alonso not ruling out Ferrari future

19 December, 2007

D

ouble world champion Fernando Alonso has refused to rule out ever joining Ferrari. The Spaniard has left McLaren to re-join Renault in 2008, but speculation persists that his new contract will allow him to switch to Ferrari when a seat opens up at the Italian team a year later.

Alonso, 26, told Spanish radio this week that every team "except Ferrari" approached him about working together in 2008. He also told Cadena Ser:

Alonso also played down reports that Brazilian rookie Nelson Piquet Jr could in 2008 give him just as much trouble as a teammate as Lewis Hamilton did this year. "It is up to me. All I have to do is go faster than him and, anyway, I believe that Flavio [briatore] knows how to handle the situation. I don't think there are going to be any problems," Alonso said.

First thing he said: It is up to me.

Piquet confirms desire to beat Alonso to title

Dec.21 (GMM) Nelson Piquet Jr has confirmed that he does not intend to settle for second best alongside Fernando Alonso at Renault in 2008.

It has been made clear by the French team's management that a hierarchical structure is the most efficient way to manage a top formula one driver lineup.

But Piquet Jr's famous father and namesake, the former triple world champion Nelson Piquet, recently hit back by suggesting that his son's objective for his first formula one season will be to beat his teammate.

"I'm here to try to win," 22-year-old Piquet Jr said in Brasilia on Thursday, after a meeting with Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn.

"I think I'm capable of becoming the world champion," he added.

The Spanish press believes that, despite Renault's apparent desire for a driver hierarchy in 2008, Piquet Jr could give double world champion Alonso as much grief as did Lewis Hamilton at McLaren this year.

Piquet confirmed: "I'll try to be faster than him, of course, but I don't even know him yet.

"We are working for the team and don't want any fights. Our relationship is probably going to grow as the season progresses," he added.

Alonso and Hamilton, who in 2007 was a formula one newcomer, famously clashed at McLaren, before Spaniard Alonso and the British team agreed to end their multi-year contract.

Piquet Jr said of the 26-year-old Alonso: "I don't think he will want to repeat the same mistake again."

I'm looking forward to seeing how things play out at Renault next year!

The old warrior lay on the floor having been jousted off his horse by the unknown soldier. As he lays, battered and bewildered he holds his hand out to a young man who comes over to inspect the old mans plight.

"Son, help me and together we shall rule the kingdom"

"What and be number two to you you whiney old Spanish twat? Nah!"

With that, the young man sinks his blade into the warriors chest. The heavily tanned unknown soldier look on, laughing.

Change Spanish for British and it will apply to Hamilton and Kovalainen.

Cool! I'd love to, that way I can meet you and Ecap together! Remind me though, Kiko: what was the discount for faithful TF1 members?

^ All Alonso would need to do, is use the old political schemes like Prost with Mansell at Ferrari. In other words no setup or info nor the latest upgrades so Junior would thus struggle in the mid-field like good Nige and then whine that he'll retire out of disgust for F1.

Ah, the good old days.

 I think we can safely say that Alonso already does that whenever possible, but I doubt keeping his setups secret will be so effective nowadays. NPJr already has a year's worth of testing under his belt, and it's probably easier to set up the cars now with more help from the engineers and computer simulations.

As a fan of both Fernando and the Silver team, I am disappointed with how things worked out during 2007, and Realistically Renault was going to be his only decent choice for 2008. Due to Fernando\'s nature I cannot see him racing against Raikkonen, but I believe he probably would against Massa. Whether or not he ever ends up in Ferrari will ultimately depend on what Raikkonen does after 2009 IMO

I agree, especially with the bolded bit.

I am not so sure about that any more Murray. I think Ferrari used team orders in the days of Schumi, but it appears that they don\'t do so any more, and unless they put a clause in Nando\'s contract, it would be fair to assume he would face competition from Massa. I believe Fernando is fast enough to beat him anyway, but I wouldn\'t like to see a repeat of 2007

Yep. I think Ferrari's policy has probably always been to wait to see which driver was best, then favour them, so Alonso would win out over Massa by half season most likely.

Hheehh... Yield Management. Summing up a lot i have to fill the hotels by dealing with the tour operators (not easy when you have 3.000 hotel rooms). My possition is Sales Manager for the Pacific Coast.

It seems you're quite busy too

When it comes to disccounts i'm the man ;)

Being a TF1 member is allways a very positive thing to me but the disccount depends on the racer you support... It can goes from the 1% disccount for the Lewis##terics to the 50% for the Alonsohisterics. Raikkonenhisterics could get a 25% off (Brad only 15%):lol:

In your case and allthough i still think you're evil for sure you could get a very nice rate, if you really want to come here just let me know.

 Damn, Kiko! I knew I was supporting the wrong guys! Well, seriously, I would like to visit Mexico one day. I used to live in Texas but I was very young and can't remember if we ever did cross the border. Right now I'm a poor student and can hardly afford to visit europe much. You might be back in Spain (another place I'd love to see but never have) before I can afford a major holiday.

Yeah, Spinning isn't bad, probably got caught at a bad piece of track...

Alonso crashed at Monza(i think) this year, doesn't mean Mclarens were bad, or he was bad... even he just caught the wrong end of the track and it caused his accident...

Raikkonen crashed at Monza, Alonso crashed at Fuji and had excursions at Montreal.
