The world of quantum mechanics is very alien to us and does not behave at all like the observable world. Thats why one of the big goals of physisists is to try to unite the world of the ultra-small and the ultra-large with one unifying theory. (Isn't there another thread about this somewhere?)

Thanks for the video. Is the program anything to do with creationism or some strange philosophy? At points I think the speakers say some strange and dubious things regarding the interpretation of quantum mechanics (QM), which is something scientists do not really understand at all.

For example, the most widely used interpretation of QM (the Copenhagen interpretation) asserts that the whole issue of where the ball is when you're not looking is in fact completely meaningless. It is like asking what the colour blue tastes like. After all, we can no more see the ball without looking than we can eat blue.

Being the most ignorant of the pro science posters, I am still arrogant enough to add my little bit to that video.

QM was a bless and a curse for scientists and science in general. For one side, it gave us enough insight into the inner processes of the very small as to comprehened a miriad of things we could not understand before. It also set the foundations for the amazing developments the 20th century gave us (like this very internet we are using right now, for example). On the other side...well, it drove everybody crazy. Notions you could not fully understand, impossible things that you should accept whether you like it or not, and the complete redesign of things we took for granted till then like "what does 'measuring' mean". It really turned the world upside down for many scientists. They even had a name for the condition they got for studying it too much: "Quantum Weirdness". The EPR paradox, Schr

There is so much that we cannot possibly comprehend with our limited physiology and conciousness, but what we DO know, or at least understand, in the (cosmically) short time we've been around is staggering to me. I say there is a god. No, not the sadistic bearded old man in the sky. The god that I am in awe of is the vast unknown and the unknowable. The true nature of reality and existance is something we will probably never understand. Even if we do eventually know HOW everything works (unlikely), we will never come to understand WHY every thing is. If we do, then WE are the gods.

Just looking up at the sky at night makes all the petty happenings, politics, religions and wars of our species seem so meaningless and inconsequencial. All of humanity, all it's history, it's greatest achevements, it's heinous attrocities will some day be cosmic dust; a flash in the pan that no one will ever notice. The great machine that is the universe will continue on.

I am not talking about just a feeling I am talking about a real contact with God, there are many things that you don't understand about this but I know exactly what you mean and what I am tlking about is different, I used to talk about that connection you're talking to in my atheist days, but this is completely different, if you want to know about it get closer to someone who has experience the baptizm of the Holly Spirit and ask him/her about it and you will see that is nothing like what your talking about, that's a experience that is different for everybody, some people like me recieve it before being a chrystian, there ar support for this in the bible, many other receive it when they are baptize in water and many other could be waiting for years I know people who has never recieve it at least not in a visible way, I know people who recieved it after seven year, why is that, because that happens to you when God says it is time for that.

I don't support any religion, religion means nothing to me, I know I got what I got from Jesus and that is what I preach, Jesus is real, he is alive and he is the only way, many religions will tell you this and that is what is important to me, I don't know if there is any other way to get to Jesus but salvation only comes from him, believe I would like things to be different but so far that's what I think and believe, I've seen this working so it's not just my imagination, I've seen people who were on drugs being clean from them in just a second and never used them again, I see life changing just by recieving Jesus.

I would like to celebrate that too but I think that's not the way, you can have what many people call a better spiritual life and still don't have that relationship with God that make you his child, wtihout that you are just getting a good life on earth but nothing else and that isnot enough to be really saved.

Can you define then your experience of a real connection with God, and how you think it differs to say a buddhist monk's connection with the nature of mind?

You see, you've hit on the truth there. Man doesn't want to be insignificant. The creation of any god gives those under that god significance of being insignificant.

How many times have you heard, "you are never trully alone" or "God is with you everywhere"? This is telling you that you are significant to someone / something.

But the fact of the matter is, you're not. You, me, everyone is so insignificant in beggars belief.

For those who can't crasp just how significanty they are insignificant they must grasp onto something to make them significant. But you're not.

You can die at any second, due to a million quadrillion and one reasons.

Religion is for the living. Thats all.

When you're dead - you're dead. Your energy never ceases, as energy is unstoppable - it just transforms. It is only your brain telling you that you have a soul, based on thousands of years of someone else telling you that.

In todays world it is braver to say there is no god, than to blindly accept there is one. It is braver to say mankind does not have all the answers. It is braver to say "we got it wrong". It is braver to re-examine our findings.

I was thinking today while reading the thread how wonderful forums can be. This is a discussion over things people has killed each other for centuries. We are a bunch of people from countries most of us haven't heard about or cared about until a few years ago. Yet, in a forum (an F1 forum, nontheless!) our cultures are clashing like no other cultures have clashed since the europeans invaded america. And here we are, people with from totally different cultural backgrounds, with totally opposite views on many things, discussing one of the most sensible issues out there.

And yes, we grow impatient, we sometimes write vitriolic replies, sarcasm is more common than reasoning, but we read and learn and reply and even if no one changes their mind, we all will come out being a little wiser, for knowing better the other side's point of view if nothing else. And we all (well, almost all) end up making jokes together and no real harm is done to anybody. Religious people, not so religious ones, agnostics, atheists and rampant nihilists all end up joking around and laughing at each other and ourselves.

For this, I decree that forums and internet are men's gift to god

Not to be a business philistine or anything, but why did you study that exactly? Do you just find it interesting, or was it to get a good job? I would have imagined someone like you doing some broad liberal arts course. I'd like to have done that myself, but the UK doesn't really offer it.

Yeah UK education is very focused on your proffession, while in US you have to do other courses to graduate...I mean we do end up finding the easiet courses but most of them are something to do with the world, like World Religions and World music and stuff, give you a much wider perspective....
