OH! I love Monk. Adrian Monk is like. The coolness. Loved the ep when he meets his dad and goes away for christmas driving with him. Brilliant!

Last two films I watched were both excellent. Role Models was hilarious, and Gladiator (yes, a little late I know) was fantastic.

As for tv, can't wait for Dexter, Lost, True Blood and House to return. I could probably watch the latest series of each online somewhere, but honestly I don't think it would do them justice.

Caught up with two films on disc this weekend.

• The documentary Tyson held my interest if only because the man himself is so flawed and most of the film is him in close-up addressing the camera. For a good part of his professional career he has had the element of a car wreck that you can't quite turn away from.
• Defiance with Daniel Craig & Liev Schrieber. A rather fascinating story (a true one) and put together by people who obviously care but... is has that Hollywood feel to it that diminished the impact for me. Daniel Craig, however, continues to impress.

"Secondhand Lions" . A delightful & excellent movie, shows in an entertaining manner how lasting & fond relationships are formed. Michael Caine, Robert Duvall & Haley Joel Osment put in superb acting performances. A must-see!!

After doing a lot of junk in the second half of the 1970's and in to the 1980's, Caine walked away from most film work for a period. Age and experience have taught him to moderate his willingness to say "Yes" and take the money and run. Good for him. Also, add Children of Men to your list.

@ Steph in particular - you're a martial arts fan? We've just watched Ong Bak, you have to see it, one of the best of all time - no special effects, completley unbe-feking-lievable. And a good story (for martial arts films!), and I'm sure you'll think the lead guy is fitter than a butcher's dog I 'play' at, and my son does Kuk Sool, but this was on another planet.

Someone lent us the dvd, though a quick look at Amazon shows there's another, sequel or sumat - but whatever, watch this one and be blown away.

Sorry Steph I don't know which martial arts float your boat - but I'd be interested in what this art is called? Looks a bit like a cross between Thai Boxing, Aikido, Kung Foo and... something else - a couple of the set moves (which you see early in the film) look similar to Kuk Sool which my son is into - though that is a mix of many martial arts too (Korean based).

As this thread has gone quiet (which probably explains my attraction to it) I will take a bit of liberty with the title itself. I see that some of you have mentioned television shows/series in passing - Monk, as discussed by Quiet One and Koptite Girl, for example, I, too, have enjoyed. Two series I have particularly come to admire, one gone, the other ongoing, are Deadwood and Mad Men. Both are very much of a time and place, both driven by creative writing teams with strong plot and character developments. I've just begun watching the final season (3) of Deadwood and I know I'll be left feeling empty when it concludes. If it had nothing else - and it has much - it provided Ian McShane with the role of a lifetime.

I'm interested to hear comments from anyone of you who have watched either of these. Thank you, and I'll take my answers off line...

Last film watched: The Bourne Identity. Fun, and nothing more. Only problem is I can't help look at Matt Damon and remember that scene in Team America

As for TV, Lost has returned for its finale - I hope it lives up to expectations.

Finally got around to watching In Bruges this weekend and it's quite good. I was especially delighted to see Brendan Gleeson again; I think I last saw him in Boorman's The General.

Watched Invictus. I think good old Clint should retire to Miami Beach now. The movie was a shameless excuse to make money on the upcoming fad for South Africa due to the World Cup. You can choose how to watch it: as a sports movie with no real value (most sport movies actually have no real value anyways) or a pseudo documentary on Mandela with negative value.

Yes, you read it right. The whole movie shows a Mandela so good it turns a pivotal leader on his own right into a sort of idiotic rugby obsessed Uncle Tom. If you are going to meddle with such things as the apartheid regime or Mandela's way of finally integrating a nation, you could at least do some more effort than this simplistic movie.

I don't know if I am being too negative, I expect the fellow South Africans from the forum to enlighten me, but it really seemed like the movie was more insulting than praising Mandela with such a portrait.

The only thing I rescued: "Shosholoza", that's a damn fine song! And was surprised to hear the "Olé, olé" song, I didn't know it was so universal, it is commonly used here too at any sport match. In fact, I always thought that it was a purely local chant.

Old Clint spent a good part of his career starring in, and often directing, more than a few forgettable films. But, as whole, they made money. Then one day he had an epiphany and decided he wanted to start making films with substance. I will give him credit for that much. About 20 years ago (Unforgiven) he shifted gears and has actually made some films of merit. I would mention Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby as examples. They are not great because Eastwood is not a great film maker. He has also supplied his name to projects to allow other directors to get their work completed (a good example would be the documentary on T. Monk, Straight, No Chaser.)

He's competent, quick and efficient. He would have fit beautifully into Hollywood's old studio system. He can usually find a quality script and with a little luck produces a good film. He's quite capable of ruining good material (Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil) because he doesn't know when to walk away from the director's chair and hand the reins over to someone else.

I'm not surprised that he got in over his head with Invictus. I will use the phrase, "I think he meant well" but, again, he won't face his own limitations.

Saw "Legion" on Saturday, pretty good film! Ad doesn't tell you much, the movie is full of guns & possesed humans/zombies! Not a very well made film as you'll tell in a few parts but if you like action & horror then this is a must see!

dear labrador, 9 Reinas is very good film but stay far from the US version: disastrous! I highly recommend the new Oscar winner from andres-and-I-land: El secreto de sus ojos. Excellent with a very clever and unespected end.
