pumpdoc 2 Report post Posted August 28, 2006 Yea, Alonso was adjusting his engine rev's and as usual the brake bias (heard he has it on his wheel instead of on the side like MS and others) he was also smoothly applying throttle out of the corners because of rear tire blistering which was for all to see from live telemetry... and some think Alonso wont be able to adapt to the McLaren Front to rear bias must be made by a mechanical link as per the rules, no way it's on the steering wheel...... Player(1) 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2006 Front to rear bias must be made by a mechanical link as per the rules, no way it's on the steering wheel...... I know, either they have it working mechanically that way which im sure is possible or else I'm mistaken and it's the differential or something.
Autumnpuma 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2006 I'm not sure about Alonso adjusting brake-bias via the steering wheel. It seems to me that a mechanical connection would be difficult to make on a device that turns and removes from the column. Most likely it was him adjusting the revs. Alonso clearly stated in the post-race press conference that he was adjusting the engine revs at certain points to keep M$ behind him. He also stated that at the final corner, he adjusted his line to prevent M$ from trying a 'dangerous' passing attempt. From Sunday's press conference: Alonso: Yes to be honest I was confident. I was playing with the revs in the engine a little bit. It was going up and down depending on the distance I had to Michael. At the last corner I slowed just in case Michael tried a risky manoeuvre, but the exit was quite bad and the distance to the line was very close. But I knew that it was enough. Ferrari had the better car and that was more than obvious. M$, aside from 'The Eight', was smoother and faster at all points of the track. Alonso could be seen wiggling on exit in a number of places (4/5/6 complex and 12). The fact that Alonso kept the faster car, piloted by a charging M$, behind him is another marker of Alonso's skill. Absolutely but Michael knew that there was also a risk of making a move and being taken out. The gamble was close by two points, lose by two points or lose by eight points. You could argue that Michael should have had a lunge but i bet all he could hear was 'ooh just like Jerez' ringing in his ears. The fact that he has come out and said that he will take risks confirms in my mind that he played safe. http://www.f1racing.net/en/news.php?newsID=128440

Alonso's skill is always in doubt, so I try to point these things out when I can.
stopkidding 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2006 from that link above... "We will continue attacking, putting on the pressure and taking risks as this is the only tactic possible," he added. "I don't usually like making promises but I would like to make just one: we will continue doing all that we can to take the title." He has every possible record in the book, yet he would fight it like chasing a first race win! love the man's spirit! GO SCHUMI GO!
Player(1) 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2006 It was an onboard video of Alonso doing a qualifying lap and Brundle (i think) said watch for him adjusted the brake settings on his wheel unlike Schumacher who uses a level on the side. Or atleast that's the best way I remember it. If i'm mistaken then the most sensible thing I can think of him adjusting is the differential maybe even TC.
Autumnpuma 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2006 TC is a possibility; M$ adjusts his TC for slow and high-speed corners on the wheel (button on the top right of the wheel). It's not beyond the realm of possibility for it to be the brake-bias, but that would require a cable running up through the 'column' then stopping at the detachment lip. At that area you would have to have a small gear-like device mated with a similar device on the wheel, so that they would be tight when the steering wheel is attached. That would be difficult to do, considering the entire cable would be required to follow the wheel travel from left to right during steering. Also, you would have the difficulty of lining up the end in the steering wheel to the end in the 'column' when leaving or entering the car. Much simpler to have a lever or dial located on the inside of the c#ckpit wall, I would think. With Alonso's ability to adjust his driving style (per Payt Symmonds in an F1 Racing article-please don't make me dig it out) I would guess he doesn't adjust the bias over the span of a race. Even If alonso wins this year again, I dont think its proof of his skill. In the first half he did have a far supirior car and its not all that hard to keep someone behind you. the real hard part is passing and we have never seen alonso do anypassing of another driver that wasnt damaged or in a car that was not on par with his, either due to weather, like MS in Hungry, or just plane out proformed, when he starts in 5th he finishes in 5th, and thats why i dont see him as worthy. pumpdoc 2 Report post Posted August 29, 2006 Front-rear brake bias can only be adjusted by and anolog knob in the c#ckpit, not the steering wheel, not the roll bar, not etc................ and by anolog they mean by cable................end of!!!!

Autumnpuma 0 Report post Posted August 29, 2006 OOOOO....nice, pic! Okay, here's the pic, bigger, with my comments below: Notice your red arrow on the left. That is pointing to a lever/dial with the words 'Front' on it. Clearly this is brake-bias and I am wrong, Fernando must adjust it at some point! The red arrow on the right is pointing to a dial that is likely the engine rev position. Remember the team radio when they say 'Position 4, Fernando, position 4' during a safety car period? That's probably what the dial is for. The TC is controlled by the little toggle beneath that labeled TC. Thoughts?

Well, there are a lot of dials to put in position 4...damn! what difference with the old wheels!
Autumnpuma 0 Report post Posted August 29, 2006 I think the dial is a rev selector because the two buttons next to it, pit limiter and overdrive, both control revs and would use the same circuit as a rev selector. In that same vein, notice how close the button for the pit limiter is close to the dial? Remember in Hungary when Alonso suddenly went slow at the exit to a corner (don't remember which one)? I think that, with the way F1 cars bump tremendously, Alonso was trying to select a different rev for the corner entry, hit a bump and accidentally hit the pit limiter button. He then probably had to hit the limiter again then, since he as going slower, re-select the proper rev on the dial... At least that's what happened in my fantasy world.. If he did the world would know it as the fuel door would open and the red(rear) light would be flashing, also you would think that there would be a fail-safe in the software to prevent this unless the proper paramiters were present............... Ctrl300 0 Report post Posted August 29, 2006 Maybe I hjave lost the plot of the thread, but Alonso said he was able to play with the revs, and said that he took a deliberate defensive/blocking approach into the last turn in case Michael had one last go. When asked about if he ever feared he would be caught in the straight he said he knew he had it under control. I dont know, but if 0.00021 of a second is under control he must be genius. Regardless, he drove a magnificent race, and he is, unlike what some here is claiming, a true champ.
Autumnpuma 0 Report post Posted August 29, 2006 Yeah, Alonso played with the revs and was thinking his way ahead of M$. Certain other drivers can only go fast, but Alonso seems able to think while he's out there. My speculation about the steering wheel and the pit limiter was a tangent...sorry I also think that if the race had gone on 2 more laps, Mikey would have spanked Alonso. This is not to take anything away from our current champion, but his driving was starting to get erratic at the end--probably caused by his rear tyres handling like ice. Alonso overtook Massa on track in Bahrain this year, the car's where extrememly close in performance and it was early in the race so not even excessive tire wear. Only way you overtake someone in F1 these days is to have a much faster car or for the onther person to make a mistake with you very close behind. Can you actually tell us anyone MS has passed on track in a faster car without some kind of damage, structual, tires or is payed to let him by? Let's say since 2001 which is when Alonso Debuted so the car's aero and other setup's are comparible with difficulty of overtaking, when its hard to overtake in F1 car's that are slightly slower then yours theres no point saying MS has done it in the early 90's so FA should be able to do it now.
