In the news today, Sutil will apparently face a charge of GBH, for the incident in a Shanghai nightclub in April. Massa 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2012 Someone on another forum pointed out that F1 was about racing the track, and NASCAR was about racing the competition/traffic. It's such a simple way to look at it and somehow I never thought of it that way. I would amend it, of course. There are still moments when F1 does the NASCAR stuff, and NASCAR does the F1 stuff...there is still overtaking in F1, and ovals are actually a driving challenge (mostly because they punish errors a lot more severely, even though their layouts don't necessarily cause those errors as much as the other drivers do...but that's a huge generalization given that there are many ovals that as tracks, even all alone as the single car, are a total *****. Indy, Darlington, etc). And they both have a fair amount of racing the car...no one can say an F1 car or a stock car are particularly easy things to handle. I only say this because having seen someone say it that way, in a way that is not derogatory to either series, but points out the truth has finally made me realize how you guys can enjoy F1 so much when it's not "exciting" to me. So, today in F1, I gained some vague understanding of F1. It did nothing to increase my interest in it, but at least I see where you guys are coming from. Massa 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2012 It looks as though Bruno Senna will be at Williams next year. Petrov may land at Caterham, perhaps D'Ambrosio, or even Glock if Petrov goes to Marussia. It's a shame, I think, that Williams aren't in such a good position right now, if only because I just want to get one real season to see how Senna does. I think he's someone I could actually support and that would really increase my F1 interest to have a favorite (at the moment I'm patiently waiting for Wickens to debut, but I don't really think he's good enough to last, and I'm cautiously curious about JEV, who came across as a pretty decent guy last year, but he may be a bit too talented for me to really like him because you know I love underdogs). Regardless, better to have Senna somewhere on the grid than going to NASCAR where, as nice as he was about that option and as much as his family is so respected in the NASCAR garage (so many list him with Earnhardt as heroes; Earnhardt, in fact, won a race at Talladega on May 1, 1994, and the first words out of his mouth were to extend thoughts and prayers to Senna's family and fans, calling him a "great racer," words I don't think I've ever known Earnhardt to publicly use about any other driver to give that context), I think we all know that it isn't really where he wants to be and is much more fun to watch someone relentlessly chase a dream, whatever that dream is, than phone-it-in playing bumper cars with Nelson Piquet, Jr. and friends when their heart's just not in it. I'm not sure if he's really good enough for F1. I haven't seen the proof, but I also haven't seen a whole lot of his races in general, but he seems like a good guy and quite honestly, I enjoy redemption and second chances so the more I see people (even people like myself) give up on him after all the hype that once surrounded him, the more I end up liking him. I know you're not a fan of IRL, but for me one of the attractions of it is the close racing on ovals. (last race of 2011 excepted, of course). At first I could not see what the fuss was all about, but as I got into it, found it far more interesting and certainly a lot more racing. Remember the Michigan Mile race from a few years ago with Michael Andretti and can't remember the other driver where the lead changed 257 times - right up to the finish line... DRS this year has helped make F1 more interesting but there are still the occasional yawn-fests. As for NASCAR.... hmmm.... tried but just can't get into it. HandyNZL 1 Report post Posted January 17, 2012 It's because they have doors. Discussing this on the weekend at a race meet down in Taupo with one of the Formula Ford guys. He's in his fifties and has raced for thirty years. This is his third time in a Formula Ford, interspersed with sports car racing, but never saloon racing. The reason being that saloon cars are not "real" race cars...you see them everyday at the supermarket, whereas open wheelers and sports cars (like Radical's, Juno's, Mallock's etc etc) can only ever be a race car. I have been the same way since I was a kid and my Dad took me to my first race (that I remember, as I was sitting in race cars and c#ckpits since I was a toddler, or so the many people commented on when I was at Teretonga last summer, with them all going..."this is your son now....I remember when he sat in my car...."). The open wheelers always had my attention. Then the TranzAm cars (which were essentially GT cars of the period). And I've always loved CanAm...beasts made to race and race only. Watching a group of Nissan Sentra's race then, and a BMW race today just has no real appeal. Sure I'll watch, but only idly...though in saying that, the Honda GT Cup guys had a great few races this weekend with a 2-litre CRX ripping up the track (literally too when he spun off...ha!) Watching NASCAR is akin to watching people circle the local mall car park at Christmas looking for a space to park in, even though under the fake skin is a ground up built race car. I think he's ridden the "Senna" name obviously to his advantage, but wonder if he would have got this far with a different last name. I can't see Williams having a great year this year, but after last years efforts, anything is an improvement. So it's adios to Rubens then. Can't say I've ever loved the guy, but he's been a trooper I suppose. He's had some good times, a few wins for being in the right team at the right time etc. It's off to Indycar I think for him. The era you talk about of CART was great; I loved Champ Car right up to the end, though I wished the final Champ Car had some short ovals and such. In reality, I like IndyCar racing so much that I'm frustrated to see the management in the last decade or two, on all sides (IRL, CCWS, and the unified INDYCAR), be so confused and direction-less. They've just made a mess of things when there were legitimate alternatives, and I know a few sponsors who have turned them down for being "dishonest" and "shady" as a league. His wife won't let him race ovals, so IndyCar would be out of the question, I think (he's looked at running the 500 before in moments of uncertainty but she has consistently said "no").
